At least Lucas didn't get to make a movie based on his original idea: Indiana Jones and the Space Men from Mars. You can pretty much see what that would mean, much less that there would have been more sci-fi in it. If the rumors are true, Spielberg and Ford didn't like the idea, and that was a part of the reason for why a fourth movie was so long in coming. In the end, though, Lucas got his extraterrestrials... They're just not in an old, B movie-like film that he wanted.
