for those that are slightly more behind the curve, coming to the United States will be an epic, yet gory anime titled
"When they cry." or "When The Cicadas Cry" it is about a group of friends all living in one small village of about two thousand people, And supposedly the village is cursed by a spiteful god named "Oyashiro-sama." who kills a person and "spirit-away"s another person at Watanagashi, you learn in the series that "Oyashiro-sama" didn't start the curse until after teh government tried to build a dam that would have Killed/Moved everyone living in Hinamizawa, and that a Bloody fight between the supporters and non-supporters of the dam happened that ended in the death of the captain of the construction force by him being killed and dismembered, the captain's arm was never found.

no I will not be revealing spoilers but, I will tell you about the important characters:

Keiichi Maebara:

Background
:
Lived away from Hinamizawa, for a few years and recently returned when the anime starts, the time period in the anime is in the 1980's, He often is "punished" by his friends for not completing homework, or losing at a club game. He closely resembles a character that was "spirited-away" a few years back.

Mion Sonazaki:
Image

Background:
Lived in Hinamizawa for her entire life. States in episode five to have a twin sister named "Shion". She is normally the one that "punishes" keiichi for his mistakes and She is going to be the next head of the Sonazaki house. Her grandmother is the current Sonazaki house head.

Satoko Hojo:
Image

Background:
She has lived in Hinamizawa her entire life, and has and/or had an older brother named Satoshi, who was "spirited away" Often through the series it is stated that Keiichi looks like Satoshi, except for their hair color, some believe that Satoshi is still alive, Mion, and Satoko both believe he is alive. She is called the "Trap-master" in the series because she often times sets up small traps like a pail of water above the door, or a small gun that will shoot chalk at Keiichi.

Rena Ryuugu:
Image

Background:
She, like Keiichi lived in Hinamizawa for a while, then moved out of the village with her mother, she is often seen in the series weilding a Machete-like bill hook knife. She sometimes seems to be the most normal until you find out in the series she was sent back to Hinamizawa after vandalizing her school out of the village by smashing windows and assaulting three classmates.

Rika Furude:
Image

Background:
She has lived in Hinamizawa all her life and not alot is known other than that she is supposedly in-tune with Oyashiro-sama, and she works at the local shrine at Hinamizawa.

I've watched that. It was freaky. Good but freaky. I still think Rena through Keiichi's eyes in the first arc is one of the scariest girls ever created.

good series... though very very confusing.

i would suggest reading the wiki if you really want details but the general gist is that the series is that it's split into question and answer story arcs, the anime covers several don't remeber which ones off hand though but as it stands to truly understand the series you'll need to see/read/play (original is a game series).

notably though, DO NOT WATCH IF YOU DON'T LIKE BlOOD/gore or if your faint of heart. The series starts off innocent enough however it gets really dark really fast.

So, I started watching this insane series last year, and can say I REALLY, REALLY enjoyed it. It was confusing, gory, and funny, but once you get a handle as to what's going on, it's REALLY fun to watch. If you can take the violence in it, that is. But yeah.

Amazing series, the way the creepiness and horror is presented in contrast to the lighthearted feel it tries to give is astounding, though in my opinion the ending (so far) was a little anti-climactic. Hopefully they'll make up for this in Higurashi - Rei
