Time Bokan

Basically, I just learned about this series. It's an anime from the 70's -- which has also spawned different incarnations/series from it of the 'Time Bokan' genre, -- that involves such things as time travel. Here's the opening them.

I also learned that the Pokemon anime is basically a homage of sorts to Time Bokan, since Jessie, James, and Meowth are crafted in a similar way to the villainous trio of the series, the Skull Gang. The Skull Gang was incompetent, bumbling, and comedic, always getting involved with the heroes as well as making various machines and robots that would eventually backfire on them.

And apparently, the robot sidekick that went along with the heroes was capable of shocking people with electricity.

When you think about all of this, it's then easy to see where such anime as Mon Colle Knights and Flint the Time Detective fit into the grand scheme of things.

Time Bokan was basically the originator of the whole 'Terrible Trio' thing you find in anime.

Dinosaur King also employs the "Terrible Trio" theme, with the main Antagonist Dr Z sending his associates Ursula (aka the Old Lady), Zander (the skinny guy who ends up paying for all the ships and other things the Alpha Gang need to get to the dinosaur location, and Ed (the short, fat, sensitive guy).

Season 2 of Dinosaur King have the Spectral Space Pirates, which includes a trio of pirates Gavro (the muscle/tank guy), the super fast Foolscap, and the intelligent, yet devious female alien pirate, Sheer. They all sport a pair of wings to fly, and use Spectral Armor on their dinosaurs to do battle.

I've never seen Dinosaur King before, so I'm not sure of what it's really about or anything. XD

Dinosaur King is about Max Taylor, son of the paleontologist Spike Taylor, and his friends, Rex Owen and Zoe Drake. They find special stones and cards with matching symbols on them (like Lightning, Wind, Grass), and swipe the card on the stone, revealing a dinosaur! Max gets a yellow Triceratops he calls Chomp, and Rex and Zoe get their dinosaurs, Ace the Carnotaurus and Paris the Parasoulophus. The newly created D-team head to the D-Lab, where Zoe's sister Reece creates some Dino holders for our protagonists to use the memories of the dinosaurs sealed in the stones.

The main antagonist is Dr Z. He wants to be the Dinosaur King, and his base of operations is called Zeta Point, an artificial island in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii that is really a time machine called the Backland. The Backland was damaged during the time travel from the Cretaceous Period (Age of Dinosaurs), where Dr Z and his crew captured dinosaurs and turned them into cards, with special move cards that can be used to enhance the dinosaur to battle when swiped through the card reader. Dr Z sends out his 3 bumbling associates, Ursula, Zander, and Ed to get the missing cards they discover. The Alpha Gang and the D-Team battle over the missing cards throughout the world, collecting different types of dinosaurs from Spinosaurus (Spiny) to Saichania (Tank), which the Alpha Gang add to their collection. Dr Z's grandchildren Laura and Rod even get to collect dinosaurs, using Terry the Tyranosaurus, Spiny the Spinosaurus, and Tank the Saichania. They discover two androids, Helga, the cook from the Alpha Gang, and Johnaton, who was damaged when the Backland crashed. Once repaired, Johnathon pilots the Backland time machine/ship through time when the Spectral Space Pirates kidnap Max, Zoe, and Rex's birth parents (who return to take Rex to the future), and return to meet Max and Zoe's parents, when Gavro, one of the Space Pirates, shows up. Later Gavro is joined by Foolscap and Sheer, and then their boss is revealed as Spectre.

The voice cast for Pokemon (English dub) does most of the voices for the Dinosaur King cast....

Max and Rod are voiced by Veronica Taylor, who also voices Max's mom, Aki Taylor, and Ash Ketchum from Pokemon
Laura, Reece, and Ursula are voiced by Rachel Lillis, who voices Jesse and Misty from Pokemon
Dr. Z is voiced by Eric Stuart, who voices James and Brock from Pokemon)
Dan Green (voice for Yugi Muto/Yami Yugi on Yu-Gi-Oh, and Knuckles from Sonic X) voices Johnaton.
Rex Owen is voiced by Sebastian Archaelus
Zoe Drake is voiced by Kether Donahue (Mew Pudding from Tokyo Mew Mew/Mew Mew Power)
Marc Thompson voices Max's dad and Gavro
Sheer is voiced by the voice actress who did Lettuce/Mew Lettuce on Tokyo Mew Mew/Mew Mew Power)
Foolscap is voiced by Frank Zoppi (Meowth from Pokemon).
Zander's voice is Darren Dunstan (he does Splinter's voice for TMNT, and Kaz from Chaotic)
Helga was voiced by the late Maddie Blaustein, and then later voiced by Mike Pollock (who voices Dr Robotnik/Eggman) from Sonic X.
Mike Pollock also voiced Dr. Drake, Zoe's dad, who is a vetentarian, and Shogun Tokugawa in the episode
"The No Fun Shogun."
