Joshua had spent the early part of his evening writing. He had promised himself he wouldn't spend any of his vacation working; but, a cruise had turned out to be a startlingly uninspired vacation choice for someone who didn't particularly enjoy most conventional forms of entertainment. Indeed, pools, bars, casinos and the like had gotten old a few hours after Joshua had stepped onto the ship. Thus, Joshua had found himself spending a startling amount of time working on the very paper he'd planned his vacation to escape writing. It was ironic, in an irritating sort of way. There really wasn't that much to say about Bismark that hadn't already been written, and trying to construct a thousand page thesis was rather trying. The man groaned and rubbed his temples. It really was irritating, if only something would happen. Anything could be better than sitting cooped up in his room.
Joshua had been far too oblivious to note the reversed rain outside his window; but, the screams did grab his attention after a while. Joshua had, after gathering his courage, exited his room to find a scene straight out of some science fiction novel. Confusion, panic and curiosity had driven the boy to head toward the deck in search of answers. Once there he had noticed the incredibly bizarre rain. The odd beauty of the scene had captured his attention just long enough for the glowing water droplet to close in on Joshua. He had noticed the odd droplet at the last second; but didn't manage to jerk out of the way in time.
As the droplet impacted with Joshua's chest, and the graduate student found himself suddenly transfixed. It was as if, for a single moment, time had stopped.Every color was suddenly brighter, more vibrant, as if life had suddenly become so much more real. More than that, Joshua felt as if he could see every droplet of water landing, understand exactly where each droplet would fall, and, more importantly, understand the meaning of each droplet, feel the secrets of the universe unraveling with every ripple. t It wasn't actual knowledge; but rather the feeling of knowledge, of comprehension. It was as if for one sublime second Joshua's world felt like it made absolute perfect sense. Though Joshua would not have been able to explain any meanings to what he saw.
Joshua stared awe struck, experiencing something akin to enlightenment, or perhaps Joshua had found god, or he was merely experiencing a potent hallucinogen. Even as Joshua was awe-struck by the rain, his body began to change rapidly. The man's hair lengthened dramatically, as his body inexorably reshaped itself into a far more feminine form. He went from skinny to slender as his, or rather her, figure changed dramatically. The girl's eyesight improved dramatically, though she didn't notice, lost as she was in the feeling of euphoric comprehension.
Joshua didn't notice in the slightest as the subtle make-up of his mind was changed. His ability to keep time almost perfected itself It was opened up toward the future and the past in ways that no ordinary human would ever experience. The changes would not be enough for Joshua to notice them consciously; but, the unconscious had always been more potent than the conscious mind, and Joshua's unconscious had certainly changed. In time it would manifest as sporadic, though eerily accurate guessing potential. Joshoa would certainly enjoy any future trips to vegas. Of course, even these changes were mere trifles compared to what would come when the girl awoke her true potential.
Her transformation complete, the girl awoke from her seizure, for that was the word scientists would use to describe Joshua's experience, and stared at the ocean. Slowly, she reached up, removed her glasses from her face and tossed them into the sea. Her world was changed, irrevocably, by what she had felt. Joshua sat and gazed out, the dregs of her experience filled her mind with joy. Then the ship capsized, and Joshua was sent flying overboard. The icy cold ocean, and the pain of impact startled Joshua to awareness for a few moments, long enough for the girl to grab a large piece of floating debris, and then her exhausted, confused mind shut down, and Joshua passed out.
----
Those on the raft, would, if any passenger happened to be gazing out across the water, note that an unconscious body, draped over a large piece of debris from the cruise, was drifting toward their location. It probably wouldn't be that difficult to secure the unconscious figure aboard the raft.
((Hope this fits well enough with what we discussed. If there's anything that needs to be changed, please tell me.))
