The mental alertion it provided was quite covert and minor but sufficient in telling him if something amiss was in the areas in question. The other 2 he had created at the castle gates usually sufficed when dealing with humans but with 'unknowns' additional wards were always nice to have. His chant done he proceed to grab some food to eat while he waited.
