The ancient world. The further archeologists dig, the more they come to know of the advances of a world that accomplished things still considered impossible to this day. Pyramids appear on the continents of Africa and South America, with more pyramids buried beneath the waves off the coast of Japan. American Indians have spoken languages almost identical to Hebrew. Giant rock monoliths are meticulously arranged in England and on Easter Island. There are many evidences that the ancients not only knew more than we, but that there was a single influence that encircled the globe.
Legends and Myths are some of the evidences of this influence, this connection. In every culture there are stories of heroism, of betrayal and love, of gods and goddesses and monsters. Through the mists of time, we have decided that these stories are just that. Fairy tales to teach our children lessons, fables to remind us of what we believe in. Not a single person alive today would ever believe that any of those fantastical stories from before history were even remotely based on fact.
Oh how wrong they are.
For, unbeknownst to any of our day and age, the oddities that bind human culture together and the fantastical stories of old are one and the same. The city of Atlantis was but one of many settlements, Beowulf truly capable of holding his breath for three days while wrestling with sea monsters. Dragons and Angels competed with each other for sport, while Oni and Skinwalkers discussed politics and recipes. For the people of the ancient world, the myths and legends of today were the regular, everyday hustle and bustle of yesterday.
But something happened. Somehow, all the wonder stopped, leaving our world the dreary bore it is today. How did this happen? Why? What if...those things found a way to come back...

Okay, so here's the nitty gritty. You will be a regular person in a world very much like ours; no magic, crazy scientific mumbo jumbo, etc. This is for regular human beings, so no starting out as cat-people or anything else but people-people. After an intro to make sure everyone is aquainted with each other, your character will be subjected to a certain situation that will awaken certain attributes within them. Think old-timey legends meets DBZ, only I plan on not getting all soap-opera-ey.
The main purpose of this rp will be exploration and discovery. I'm keeping many parts of the rp mechanic in the dark specifically so the players can discover it along with the plot as they play. You will be subjected to harsh conditions and will have to use your cunning to survive. Yes, there will be a main antagonist, but it's less a question of good vs. evil and more how you think the world should work. Who knows, maybe I'll make one of the players want to join the antagonist. There will be combat, but think Megaman or Zelda- it's all a puzzle that needs to be sorted out and when it is, everything just clicks.
Now, this is my first rp I'd be GMing, so the main plot will be somewhat short. Not to worry, for if the players are having fun with it and cooperating, I will be more than happy to add more plotlines in the future. Also, if you want to come into it later into the game, don't worry. The setup will be such as to allow for anyone to join in at any time, even if it will be more like a standard rp.
I will only have time to make a couple of posts per day, so don't do 5 pages of dialog every day. I'm perfectly fine with people getting carried away every now and then, since that is the fun of it. Just don't get your knickers in a twist if I ask you to slow down a bit so I and the other slow people can have a go.
And now, what you've all been waiting for: the character format and powers. I'm really hoping for some imagination here, since you can pull inspiration from any myth, legend, tall tale, or far-fetched story ever to be told around a fire. It can be western, eastern, asian, australian, martian, whatever folklore. I don't care where it comes from. I really hope for some variety as well. Go nuts with your character, and don't worry about god-modding. If I think you've got too much in one area, I'll have you make the proper adjustments to fit the scenario.
Essentially, your character will gain the form and influence of whatever legendary person/creature of your choosing. This influence will be a limiting theme for their powers/abilities. See the example character below for details. This legendary influence will come upon the person in levels. They are Levels 0 through 3.
Level 0 is relatively normal. This is how your person will be for the majority of the time. There is little to differentiate the person from someone without a legendary influence, but it's still there and it can be obvious.
Level 1 is used when threatened or under stress. The person becomes more competent with their influence and is more capable in combat and more durable in harsh conditions.
Level 2 is for lashing out in anger or displays of other strong emotions. The person's form changes to clearly reflect the source of their influence. Combat abilities are excellent and they are able to perform many seemingly impossible feats.
Level 3 is unattainable without training or extremely sever circumstances. No one will reach level 3 without my say so, as the person becomes a living embodiment of their influence and is closer to a force of nature or demigod than anything else. Because of the extreme amounts of power level 3 requires, it also cannot be maintained for very long, forcing the person to revert to level 2 after some time.
To demonstrate how the influences work with the levels, here is a sample character. It's also a sample of how to introduce tg if you so desire. However, tg is not necessary.
Tim-
Legendary Being- Ursa (the constellation)
Influence- motherly strength
Level 0- Tim has permanently become a woman with strong maternal instincts and a desire to protect her friends.
Level 1- Tim becomes stronger, but is more prone to take hits for her friends and let them bounce off her tough skin.
Level 2- Tim becomes a giant bear, capable of uprooting small trees. Her first instinct is still to protect those with her.
Level 3- Tim reverts to her regular self, but has a motherly glow about her. Any attacks made towards her comrades will be stopped by an invisible shield and retaliated with thrown cars, boulders, houses, etc.
(note, if I wanted Tim to constantly switch between male and female, I could just have left him male and protective for level 0 and female for level 1)
To make the levels easier on yourself, just think of what kind of theme you want your character's abilities to follow. Start small, then make them progressively more awesome. If you want any help or ideas, feel free to ask me.
As for characters, the regular spiel will suffice. Name, age, gender, appearance, short bio and personality. What will be necessary is this: the rp will begin on an ocean liner in the pacific. You'll need a reason for being on the boat. And yes, I will be making my own player character. I figure the hands on approach is the way to go if people need prodding.
