Shroud of Turin

Postby Mitera Nikkou » Tue May 19, 2009 7:14 pm

I recently found out about a theory concerning the Shroud of Turin, that marks Leonardo Da Vinci as its creator. The idea, and all of the circumstantial evidence, are intriguing. I think I'm sold on the idea.

Why would a time machine be required?

that carbon dating dates it back to the 4th century last I read

looked it up, the cabon dating placed it between 1265 and 1390, but still 60 years before Leonardo was born so still time machine

Not necessarily. It's not Leonardo that needs to exist in that time period, but the linen that he used itself. And that's completely within the realm of possibility. Besides which, also prior to Leonardo's time there was a shroud that had been used for a time but ultimately removed because it was deemed to be a fake. So, while it was established before his time, Leonardo could have simply made a better fake later, after the previous one had been out of sight for some generations.

Here's a thingy I watched about it. (First half is mostly back story, past tests and hypotheses, with a basic set-up for the second half, which focuses on Leonardo's potential role.)

They took a piece of the shroud and carbon dated it. This is not "there were records of it before hand" and it got swapped sometime later.. this is the shroud was at latest woven 60 years before leonardo was born

*Sighs* Yes, and no. There are records of another shroud before the incarnation that we're talking about. Leonardo wasn't restricted to using linen that was fresh off of the loom. (Even my mother still has some old linens (for covering tabletops and such) that have been around in the family before she was born. She's almost fifty, now.) One of the many parts of the theory is based on the assumption that Leonardo would be wise enough to find (and thus use) aged-looking linen, since Jesus had been dead for over a millennium by then and what not.

This isn't solely about carbon-dating. That's probably one of the most marginal pieces of the evidence used to support the theory. (Mostly because it's made redundant by other information.) Basically, watch the documentary-thingy: all your answers lie there. I'm too lazy to go in depth about all of the details. It's really too much for me; especially right now since I've been up for two and a half days and I'm about to crash.
