Use your imagination. Humans can make it into space now, right? This could either be a result of one or two recent generations of humans, or from a civilization thousands of years ago. Other than a lack of surface evidence suggesting that there had been an advanced human civilization before recorded history, I don't think the possibility can yet be discounted. We still have many places, beneath the water and above and below the ground, yet to be explored. And in particular the north and south poles, which had not always been dominated by ice.

And while recent generations don't seem possible, you can't rule it out unless you know the exact effects that zero-gravity would have on the development of things in a womb and such. Which I'm wondering when they'll ever get around to trying... Because they'll need to know if they decide to live for any significant amount of time in space in the future.

Given that the north pole is just a frozen sea i somehow doubt that we will find much archeological evidence of anything there. As for Antarctica I am pretty certain that it has been frozen for all of human history. And if a civilization managed to achieve space flight it would leave surface evidence that could be found today and likely on more than just one continent. Such a civilization would just need an economical and infrastructural basis beyond what a single continent could provide.

Or it could just be human arrogance in the idea that we are not only a) somehow important enough for a species so technologically advanced to seek us out but also b) that any species that's out there must, in fact, look somewhat like us. Whoever was first in the drunken stupor that caused them to see that image, they probably couldn't imagine another advanced species that was anything other than a bipedal humanoid.

Possibly. We'll never know either way until any concrete evidence turns up.

My vote went to #3 as it's closest to the truth. But none are wholly accurate.
Tell me, for what price would you give up hope?

How far?
