Kucinich: Discrimination Against Any Member Of The LGBT Community Is Un-American


Washington, Oct 18 - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), the only Member of Congress from the state of Ohio on the Education and Labor Committee, spoke out against the Employee Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), that was voted on in committee today. Kucinich voted against the bill in committee to object to the exclusion of the transgendered community from the legislation.

“The Declaration of Independence says:

‘We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by
their creator with certain inalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness.’

“When you listen to these words, when they said men at that time, we know today that it doesn't just mean men. We know that it doesn’t just mean white people. We know that it doesn't just mean straight people. That it means all people.

“And so today when we’re confronted with this legislation, we should be mindful that discrimination of any kind is un-American and should not be tolerated. I stand with the principles of the LGBT community to defend against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

“Harassment, intimidation and discrimination of anyone in the workplace is unconscionable and it is un-American. All employment decisions should be based on individual performance and not on sexual orientation, perceived gender or transgendered status.

“So we have to stand firm, I believe, with all Americans in recognition that discrimination against any member of the LGBT community is discrimination against the entire community. Presentation or expression of oneself in everyday life is a fundamental human right.”

I had heard about this, any result of the vote?

It had me concerned but only people who are transaphobic would really turn me or others away for going through our transformation before checking into any job related skills.

Edit: and it was technically the Preamble that stated all the stuff about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; which most politicians overlook/disreguard when trying to single out a group.

From what I gathered the bill was passed without the inclusion of the protection of the transgendered, but I believe there are those pushing for an amendment that adds it. Also, it seems like it had originally been in the bill, but Pelosi and a few others had taken it out.

Preamble or not, it's still a part of the declaration. ;p

I see. I only skimmed a breif thing about it so I missed a bunch of important stuff I suppose XD I hope it gets amended so I can point to it if I have to.

P.S. Pelosi and these few others sound like people that I wouldn't like

Unfortunately, even if you did point to it, the employer is still more than able to come up with some lame excuse to get you fired without it blowing up in their face. I know someone who recently got fired as a mall security guard because the excuse was that the quality/condition of his uniform, and how he wore it, wasn't up to par. Even though he works while the mall itself is closed. And he had no counts against him for performance.
