I wish this the best and that it doesn't become a disaster.

Hm.. sounds like its just an activist group rather than the real representatives of the Sioux nation. All the same I hope some good comes of it since I believe all native americans were treated fairly harshly and unkindly. It is true that the US has never lived up to any of its treaties with them and I doubt it ever will. And no, I'm not saying this just because I have ancestors from the Cherokee on both sides of my family tree. ((One generation off of being able to get scholorships out of it.))

But can activists withdraw from treaties? You'd need said representatives, wouldn't you?

I think that it will most likely remain an empty manifestation by a group of Sioux and not get anywhere. For one thing it does not appear that it is the united Sioux behind it. Another is that even settling on what to do with a new country after seceding would be a herculean task and until they manage to at least get a proposal for what to do, it is unlikely anything more will come from it. And to be honest i think it is what will work out for the best, it is not exactly the richest part of the US we are talking about nor is it a part known for its statesmen and qualified civil service. A successful secession would like end in financial ruin for the area and its inhabitants, which will neither be to immediate benefit for the inhabitants, nor help raise the spirit of the Sioux after the time as part of the US.

Yes, which is why this won't go through I'm afraid. A few of the questioned tribe representatives have said they have no intentions of doing any of this or so I've read.

Not in several years at least...we need the awakening first. Also the timeline has been delayed it seems, at least corporations haven't received extraterritoriality yet...At least i will not be directly affected by the ghost dance being all the way over here in Europe. I will be drowned in toxic sludge instead...

What I wonder is: if it's not going to be taken to any serious measure, just what could the reason be behind this? Since I live with the chief of the Santee I've been overhearing a few things that make me curious.

So long as we never have that Emperium of Man from the Warhammer series come to pass I don't mind most of what might happen.

I don't know, Raleigh. There are quite a few rather nasty sci-fi stories.

Anyway back on topic, i don't think you should expect there to come much more from this Nikkou. Perhaps a bit of a power shuffle among Sioux who want to distance themself from a radical proposal like this, but the group will likely also be able to get some of the more radical Sioux. Of course it could also be the start of a rising Native American movement, but i doubt it. Native American issues is not something i know a lot about, so i am just going with my general political knowledge, so i might easily be wrong.

I think this is likely to quite simply be ignored. At most, there might be a court case that drags on for a couple years and solves nothing.

That is by far the most likely outcome Sophia, activists have used seceding to make their point quite a few times in the history of the world. Sometimes just small bits of land to make a statement, but the idea is clear and overused. Also i doubt that a whole lot of people care about what Native American activists do, as wrong as it is to ignore a group like that.
