Fruitcakes

Postby Feng » Fri Feb 13, 2009 3:16 pm

Is it just me or do College Quads tend to attract their fair share of fruitcakes in the US? Today we had some quirky Anti Evolutionists at my college [a happy belated 200th birthday to Charles Darwin by the way], guys who don't really seem to understand the concept of a friendly debate. Example: I ask a guy how come the people of Peru have adapted to the Andes and the guy starts talking about bird men [in what I think is called a Chewbacca Defense]. When I try to ask what bird men have to do with the Inca he asks why I mock him and then does what I can only describe as the dance of the one winged chicken... Ok? >_<

So anyways what sort of craziness have you guys encountered in college [or even high school as it seems to be possible to find some weird people there too]? Oh and I mean no offense to those who disagree with the theory of evolution. My philosophy is to agree to disagree and try to get along perhaps even play Soul Calibur III and such.

We've had various Evangelists appear, along with a TON of people raging against gays and abortion. They get debated down really, really quickly at Tech, but aside from one occasion when I actually destroyed some protesters, I generally just say something that they'd least expect and leave them with a TOTALLY confused expression.

That's generally the best way to deal with an awkward situation: by making it more confusing.

Chewbacca Defense

I'd love to know how Helel destroyed some protestors @_@

While I personally disagree with the theory of evolution, I've met up with some of this strange kind of defense in political discussions at my school. Granted, I am in high school, so how much can really be expected from America's youth? >_<

A large chunk of the kids from my old high school class of 2002 were, I felt, genuine nutters (and I say this not just because their taunts and insults were too third-grade). To this day I am thankful that none of those kids ended up at my college courses, because if the way they always talked to me was any indication, I'd hate to hear what they'd have to contribute towards a college class debate.
