As I was doing the dishes and staring absentmindedly at a bowl floating in a bigger bowl full of water, I was reminded of something that happened in my childhood...
okay our city would always have a summerfest down at the park alongside the river, and would have lots of those simple carnival rides like the teacups and a Ferris wheel and stuff... and I recall one year when I was like... 7~... we got on this teacup-like ride with big enclosed strawberry shaped compartments, with an opening cut in one side that you'd face out of... and I remember it was right up next to the pond area. And as the carnie running the ride made sure we were all strapped in my dad jokingly asked "we're not going to be flung into the river are we?" And I replied "well at least this would float"
The carnie looked at me condescendingly and said (as if I was stupid) "No, this thing'd sink like a rock"... I was really flustered; because I knew I wasn't wrong... but couldn't name it or properly explain it...
...as I grew up I realized that I was indeed correct... at seven years old, without anyone ever telling me anything about it and I understood the concept of buoyancy! And could tell that the strawberry's construction and material was nearly identical to that of a typical family canoe... thus, if it was to fall in the pond face up it would indeed float!... like a big fat canoe...
So for years I have wanted to find that redneck carnie and slap him in the face for having less capacity to understand physics than a seven year old!!!...
...
so yeah... random story... just always wanted to tell it... >_> <_< >_>...
