A conversation I overheard...

Postby May-chan » Wed Mar 14, 2007 9:53 pm

while waiting to have some bloodwork done, I was sitting around and there were these two poorly dressed middle aged fat ladies sitting around talking to each other and this is the conversation I overheard... mind you this is not word for word, more like a paraphrase, but a fairly accurate one at that... imagine one with a minnesotan/church lady accent and the other with a southern/church lady accent...

"hey you know what, I was watching the television the other day... with Bill... and we were watching this show..."
"oh ya were?..."
"...and there was this man, a skydiver! And he had jumped out of the plane, but his parachute, it didn't open..."
"so he fell?"
"he fell... and he hit the ground, but he didn't die, he survived."
"oh my!"
"He said he had broken every bone in his body and could have sworn he saw heaven, and he said after that he was like a changed man!"
"he saw heaven?"
"he saw heaven."
"By the way I heard Nancy died the other week."
"She did. But I heard she was a catholic. Nice lady though..."
"It's too bad she's going to go down to gosh darned heck"
"Yes she is..."

-_- BORN AGAIN EVANGELICALS! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

It's too bad that they'll be going down to gosh darned heck. I would think that any decent God would weigh a person's behavior/actions and not simply what they believe in. Any decent human being, knowing someone to be nice, would hope they are found in God's favor. Bigots, the lot of 'em.

You know, that was pretty nice right until they mentioned 'gosh darned heck'...

And, you want to know what's ironic? That there is a group of catholics saying the same thing, somewhere...(And, what's even more ironic, is that both groups are right, in their own way...Generally, it's the bigots who go to gosh-darned heck, while the tolerant ones get into heaven...)

Quite frankly, given the sheer number of religions that seem to claim that anyone who doesn't follow their specific denomination is destined to go to "gosh-darned heck," most of the human race is going to end up there anyway. Honestly, so many people are so narrow-minded....

That's just a vocal minority of many of the denominations, actually. But, yeah, that is an irony. Especially if you happen to belong to the wrong one...

They forget something important. Christians were called to be witnesses,
not lawyers or judges. After all, God Himself does not propose to judge
a man until he is dead. So why should they?

I'm pretty sure that God is non-denominational, and I think C. S. Lewis had some great ideas on, assuming the Christian Religion is correct, the inclusivity of other religions.

I like to think its all fake, since human beings are prone to lie, make things up, to gain control. But not to say that there is nothing out there. Sure something or somethings are there. xD

It's funny when someone believes it's the absolute possesor of the truth.

You never will be 100% certain. Even when those who think alike there are disagreements.

Which means that the Jehovah's Witnesses have the right idea? XD

After all, God Himself does not propose to judge a man until he is dead. So why should they?

I must disagree. He had judged many a man and killed them instead of waiting for them to die to pass sentence.

I'm pretty sure that God is non-denominational,

It'd be great if you were right, but I just don't see how the bible puts him in that light. And that rhymed. :O

and I think C. S. Lewis had some great ideas on, assuming the Christian Religion is correct, the inclusivity of other religions.

Right and wrong don't exist. ;p I mean, how can you determine which is right and which is wrong when Christianity came after Judaism? Not only that, but Christianity includes the "old testament" in their bible, which is from Judaism. Now, consider this... If Christians accept the God in the Hebrew scriptures (they must in order to take consideration of the ten commandments), then why would there be more than one denomination for Him? If he is God, why would he make a mistake and remember to make more material for the bible later? Because I just don't see how he could forget (about his son, no less), come back to it later, and let it end up making a split instead of just expanding on Judaism. And now there are so many different perceptions stemming from Judaism that the only logical determination would be for Judaism to be "right." God inspired the Hebrew scriptures first... There must be a reason why. So, instead of Christianity, a child of another religion, being the "right" one, instead it is Judaism that should be the one to include/absorb other religions.

Makes sense to me, anyway. Yay for relativity!

Nikkou...That's because Judaism sets up for Christianity. Judaism prophecies a coming Messiah. This prophecy is fulfilled in Christianity. Now, if Christian teachings said that everything in the Old Testament was a horrible mistake, and the New Testament corrects it...that would be suspicious. It instead accepts it, and evolves from it. Though certain laws, such as sacrifices and purification, are no longer necessary. Christians have already been purified, and the final sacrifice has already been made...

You are right about the 'judging' thing...Sorry. I got caught up in a neat little saying list. :(

In preaching peacefully, yes. On some other issues, not so much. I prefer trying to set a good example to others, and going door to door tends not to be the best way in the world to preach...

As for my opinion on denominations, they exist because human beings are imperfect. They make mistakes, and misunderstand things. They argue, and let themselves get corrupted. God's Truth is above those denominations, and it is towards God's Truth that the denominations theoretically aspire to. They just disagree on what that Truth is. (And Judaism has denominations as well. Just not as many. And almost all of the denominations agree on certain important points, specifically the Apostle's Creed. Not to mention that the split was not from Judaism immediately, the split started after Jesus died. Peter and Paul disagreed on some specifics, but Paul managed to convince Peter...so the point of split is actually closer to Paul.)

The reason why God made the Hebrew scriptures first, is because they lead up to Christianity, and prepare the way. It's like the difference between Algebra, and Calculus. Or, perhaps, the difference between walking and running...

I can't imagine that guy being serious. It just doesn't make sense to me.

I'd like to hear what he would say if he saw MSF.
You know the situation where a character has a little angel and devil symbolising his/her good and bad sides pop up near their head? Well, I have that too.

Except the good side is a timid schoolgirl.

And the bad side is a maniacal dark elf.
