The penny pinchers are outliers :P. Once again, there are plenty of people on the other side that balance it out. One side doesn't represent all of consumerdome and nothing any of us can do can make it. I won't buy any new medium players for a while yet, but that doesn't mean I don't think those with disposable incomes aren't going to buy them either.

I'm not saying people will go to war for it, but that doesn't mean a significant portion of people won't continue to upgrade their tech the same way they've been doing for a while now. I know people on both sides of the spectrum, some who I know will wait in line for hours to buy more than one, some who still would rather use typewriters and the postal service, so really, the whole "I know people who ____" argument isn't going to sway me. Economics doesn't work on the "people I know" theorum, it works on the supply and demand. If there's enough of a demand, one will surpass the other. With as much work the industry is doing to put the tech into their latest releases, I can't say I think there isn't a demand for it.

And many of these who are including the tech in their new models are computer companies. They aren't holdouts from it.

Well lets at least agree those gullible enough to waste income on the newest thing are not enough of a block of people to be significant and support two new mediums.

I'll cite historical precedent on why I think Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will be slow on the uptake.

1. HDTV has been very slow in being accepted in America. The mandate for digital-transmissions-only has been pushed back time and time again, originally at the beginning of this year, it's been MANDATED for February 17, 2009 as even in 2007, 85% of televisions will STILL not be digital-ready.
2. SACD and DVD-Audio have suffered EXTREMELY low uptake rates due to the lack of a drive in the consumer audio market for 5.1 music setups and a much larger internet-retail market.

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will likely be the same. Slow uptake until prices become competitive. The PS3 might be subsidized, but it's still going to take a good 3-5 years before even 50% of the market out there has a high-definition video format. DVDs started market penetration in 1996, but took until 1999 to drop below $300 US and 2003 for DVD rentals to match VHS rentals (and for the first major retailers to stop selling VHS tapes).

Thus, if the past is any indicator, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray won't become 'cheap' until 2009 and won't have a majority push until 2013.

Unless are or have access to an iPod-buying, plasma-screen watching yuppie, can't really see a lot of people initially buying system. At least, not in the current price range. Momoko shall wait 'til the last minute, again, before jumping to any new system.

I AM an I-pod buying, Plasma-Screen watching Yuppie, or at least the child of one...

And I still can't buy the system at that price...probably.

Visually Blu-Ray is really really bad. HD-DVD is throttling it in reviews.

Aside from other comments previously made, I'm just basing the price of PS3 to the other consoles, and will plainly say it's way too expensive.

I voted yes, but only cause it is admittedly very expensive, however I will buy one, but as of yet it doesn't have any good games out yet, and I don't want to have to deal with the early console problems of overheating and bugs and such.

However I will eventually get one, and hold that it is and shall be the irrefutable best console and will have the best capabilities and games for years and years to come next to, but practicly on par with the PC.

well, that's different.. an arcade/pinball machine is as much a collector's device or a profit unit as it is a game machine
