But I made the poll and put Mr. Rogers as an option... I sure thought I'd heard "Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny" plenty of times...

At the risk of provoking yet ANOTHER incredibly long and heated debate, I have to ask: Lian, what makes you think Ninja are fictional?
And they'd only be terrorists if they did their assassinations and murdering for the sake of their ideals or beliefs. They did it for money. That makes them mercenaries, or perhaps soldiers. They weren't a force trying to prove a point, they were a bunch of killers for hire.

We need to look at the options. On the ninja option it says "with surprise, the pirates don't stand a chance"

With. Surprise.

This is a conditional that ANY awesome group could win with. An ultimate showdown such as this where one side has the element of surprise is definitely one-sided. If the pirates had the element of surprise, they would win as well. The debate (in my mind at least) is whether or not these, as stereotypical beings, would come on top of the other.

Pirates win.

It's the classic Indiana Jones scene. No matter what fancy swordplay you've learned, or martial arts you've mastered...if you're out in the open like that one guy with the scimitar was against Indiana Jones with his gun, you're toast.

I'm just bringing up the fact that ninja need conditional modifiers to help their situation...pirates are by far the more adaptable and that's why they get my vote.

The conditional factor can be assumed though, because that's sort of what Ninjas DO. If they DIDN'T have the element of surprise, they wouldn't be very good Ninjas, would they?

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Without a conditional modifier, they're nothing. Pirates don't need a conditional modifier to boost their stats.

Funny you say that, Caprice, because Phoebe and myself have been discussing lately that Vikings are totally going to be the next big thing since Ninja and Pirates have been done to death. :P

The fact that the concept of the Ninjas was created by Edo period storytellers. That are losely based on some bizard budhist sects who actively were terrorist in your sense of the word, and a pair of clans that performed what is more properly gurilla warfare, but not say assassinations.

The concept we have of them, even their "uniform" is a creation of Edo period storytellers. The Black Pajamas look is based on stage hand look for people in traditional plays since they are "supposed to be invisible"

The closest thing one would have to the Ninja as seen in the Edo period and beyond would more properly be found in the middle east. A group of killers so feared and so surgical we use their name to this day.. The Assassins.

Hey! Now wait just one barnacle-picking minute...! Don't you dare wear out my vikings! It's bad enough that I recently had to de-beard myself! I'm glad that nekkidness hasn't picked up in popularity but so help you all should the vikings become popular... I'll make you all take hikings! Through the nine rings of Hell! >:O

Oh, and pirates over ninja. It's more fun with all of the chaos.

Actually, they DO.
A pirate can beat a Ninja in face-to-face combat. IF they happen to have a loaded gun on them. And IF they have the advantage of numbers.
If they're just lousy pirates (as lousy as a Ninja who can't get the element of surprise) then they might not outnumber the Ninja or have any ranged weapons. And in an even melee I'd put my money on the Ninja.

Uh... yeah... I don't really believe you about Ninjas not being real.
You might well be right; I haven't researched the topic, and I certainly have no evidence on hand against what you said, but you make stuff up all the time, so I'm going to have to stick to Ninjas being a real sect of Japanese assassins.
Though I know about those monks you were talking about from reading Shogun.
