Which is most common for music listeners?

Postby Mitera Nikkou » Mon Apr 10, 2006 8:55 am

I chose the second option since I believe it to be true. I've lived around a lot of people who got into certain music because of their friends or other things associated with certain types of music that had nothing to do with music at all. Some of those people say that they like the music even though they don't, just to fit in with other people who have the same interests. And with enough exposure people tend to have things grow on them until they do like something. I hope no one gets that confused with liking music because of their personal taste. Anything that needs to take time to invade the temple is not a worshipper of yours. ;p

taking into consideration how many different kinds of music I listen to and the fact I specifically don't listen to certain kinds (that are considered popular atm) I would have to say its personal preference to me.

For me it is very hard to portray my choice of music as an attempt to fit into a particular group or style. However, that does not mean that everybody have exactly the same motivations i have and indeed i do believe it is different and that the both motivations are about equally important overall for humanity at large.

I try to do the first, and I know people who try to do the first, but I also know people who do the second. Quite a few people who do the second, and I think the second is what leads to the traditional 'bad rap singer with a trillion viewers'. People listen to the lifestyle as opposed to the music.

I'm kind of like that myself. But I don't stop myself from listening to popular stuff if I happen to like it. I listen to it when no one's around so they don't jump to weird conclusions. -_- So many people think that music makes/defines the person. >.<

I don't listen to rap, or the mess they call 'pop'

There are of course exceptions to this, but if you what if exceptions, you'll never get anything done

I went with the last option. Your question focused on other people, which is why I answered that way. I don't really have a good answer to that right now. For me, I just do my own thing entirely. In my 60% white and rock listening school, 40% Mexican spanish music listening school, I was one of the first kids to listen to black adults rap. And then I was a "pioneer" in the areas and people I knew to listen to J-pop and such. I listen for my own reasons, and don't follow trends at all. I usually do it to relax and just "feel" the song.

I can name people who know the name of the song, but don't know the person who sings it.
And, don't know what the song is about, but like the beat, because they all hang out together...yes, music, in my shcool, is based on cliques.

I'd say it's a mix of both. Me, I listen to a given sort of music because I like it. I don't give a hoot about trendiness or if anyone else around me is listening to it too (hence why one of my favorite genres is classic rock, which hasn't been trendy for nigh on thirty or more years). But I know there are plenty of people who do listen to certain bands/singers because they're trendy at the moment, or all their friends do it and they don't want to "look dumb" or whatever, or heck, even because they think one or more members is/are "hot." Both taste and superficial social reasons are involved. The latter, from what I've noted, are mostly impressionable teenagers trying to "fit in." I think it's something a lot of people do outgrow. But as I said, you do see both.

It really depends on the people. some are just random and find whatever suits them, while others perfer to slip into various stereotypes. It's hard to tell really, since my frame of reference is somewhat homogenous.

In case you didn't know, Emo is where people sing about planning to commit suicide, and make money off of it.

If I recall, my brother, who is a Goth, considers Emo people scary.

I see... Emo doesn't sound like the right word for that, then. Since it looks like it's short for emotion. You know that song that Celine Dion did, called "my heart will go on?" I would call that emo(tional) music. I would call singing about suicide something along the lines of melo(dramatic) music. Or something like that. Anyone who's blatant about suicide and not commiting it aren't going to get any pity out of me. Might sound heartless but, eh... There are better ways to get attention, even if for money. -_-
