A Humble Query

I've been an ardent caption fan and viewer for years, but because of the perchase of my Macintosh, I have been restricted mostly to viewing, rather than creating. There are a few kind souls who have agreed to put my words on captions, but that is a burden I do not want to keep on them for long (or at all).

To get to the heart of the issue, I was wondering if anyone has encountered a decent (free programs are preferred...I don't plan to do any heavy editting) image editting programs for the mac? My attempts at appleworks have been, to say the least, failures. Any suggestions are appreciated!

I've got a couple options for you.

First, The Gimp...

This one could prove to be a bit difficult to setup in OSX, but there are step by step directions on their Mac download page. I've used this in Linux before and I've been extremely pleased with its functionality.

And then there's Inkscape...

I've never used this one before, but it looks pretty decent. Also, the setup is far easier.

They are both free and comparable to Adobe Photoshop. You shouldn't have a problem making your own captions with these tools.

Uh, Inkscape and the Gimp are slightly different. Inkscape is more of a vector drawing program (IOW, more like Adobe Illustrator). If you want to do captions, try either the Gimp or the demo of Paint Shop Pro.
