A TG wish moral dilemma

Postby Coruscate » Thu May 11, 2006 4:38 am

So let's say that tomorrow morning you wake up and discover that the real nature of the world is as described in Kosuke Fujishima's Aa Megami Sama!! (Oh My Goddess!!).

And your TGish desires are answered by none other than Hild herself, who if you didn't know, and this is a spoiler...

...is the mother of Urd, and obviously, God's lover or wife (not sure) at one point, otherwise Urd wouldn't exist.

...anyway.

So the demons in this series are more michievous and self centered than hardcore disgusting and evil, but they are demons.

So suppose Hild offers you a deal... you can get TFed into whatever form you desire, but from that moment on for eternity, you are one of her "employees," that is, a demon. Now if you know something about the AMG world you can pick a specific role, but none the less, demon / demoness you will be, and there is no save from any of the godesses, and you can't break the contract.

So... will you or won't you?

http://www.goddess-project.net

The conflict between the gods and demons does not seem to be political or idealogical in nature. Instead it seems to be based on something more simple and basic. The gods have the most control over Yggdrasil (and its power over our reality) and the demons want that power for themselves. Mostly because they just want power, in any form.

To clear up some possible confusion, Yggdrasil itself is neutral. It just keeps recreating our reality over and over according to the rules it was programed to follow. In order to alter this reality according to their wishes, the demons have their own system, Niedheg, that interfaces with Yggdrasil and instructs it to change what it's doing in some way. In order to counter this, a god or goddess must first crack the security codes Niedheg and/or the demons put on these new instructions so they can order Yggdrasil to change things back. (Demons must do the same thing to break a god's magic spells.)

The gods are doing the same thing when they use their powers, except their interface system hasn't been given a seperate name. This may be because it's so intrinsically related to Yggdrasil the gods see it as one system (or Mr. Fujishima never got around to naming it). Anyway, the gods have the most control over Yggdrasil and the demons don't like it. So their agenda is to get as much of Yggdrasil's functions routed through Niedheg as they can and reduce the number of transactions the gods control. And to do that they'll grant wishes to any mortal they can con into it while trying to undercut any god or goddess transaction they can find and force the god or goddess to return to the heavens. (That's what Mara's mission is.) In other words, they want all the wishes (program modification activity) to go through Niedheg, thereby reducing the god's control of Yggdrasil.

Some renegade demons have taken this desire to an extreme (ie -the Lord of Terror's plan to destroy Yggdrasil and replace it with a new system of its own creation.), but for the most part Niflheim is content with the conflict the way it is. That's because demon society would probably fall apart if they ever did defeat the heavens, which is one of the reasons the demon leaders (who ARE smart enough to see this) restrict their operations to just countering the gods' and goddesses' activities in our world and not pressing the fight.

So essentially, we're a 3rd (dimensional) world nation that two foriegn super powers are fighting their war of dominence in so they don't mess up their own countries. For the most part, we locals are unaware of what's going on, although the fighting occasionally affects us. And both sides have an ongoing campaign to win the hearts and minds of certain key locals (wishes) to extend their control over events.

The demons also don't try to take control by killing the gods/goddesses because of the doublet system. If a "Heavenly" deity dies then a demon connected to them dies. So it's lose-lose. It seems that some of that information is beyond the part in the series that I've read, though it would explain Mara's behavior. Still, I'm not exactly sure that I see how more wishes for demons and less for the gods/goddesses would give the demons any more control that's real. Ah, well.

And while I think it's not possible for demons to increase their number in such a way (with the doublet system it would require another god/goddess because they can't be left free of the consequence of death of a god/goddess), I would wish to be a demon straight-out and be able to choose my weaknesses (except holy or charmed objects, I guess), strengths and whatever gives an energy-replenishing bonus (like Urd and sake, Skuld and ice cream, and Belldandy and tea).

Also: Aa! Megami-sama! rocks! :3

I'd pick 'no', both for the obvious 'freaking DEMON' thing, and that I'd be worried about what I would end up doing as a demon, even if I got to chose my 'job'...a society based on pursuit of power is not my cup of tea...

I suppose, theoretically, I could grant wishes honestly...But I might end up being tempted to 'cheat' a few times...

And this is why I pick "No." I don't trust myself!

Jabberpocky - Yes, that is very true about the doublet system, which makes the story "interesting" but this is Fujishima we're talking about, his stories always have a tame edge to them, thus demons in this story aren't baby eating fiends.

Mitchell - Not surprised at all you said no, I totally expected it, I just find it "entertaining" that you are aware there is some untrustworthy / evil element to yourself. But if you are aware of it, you can keep it from bubblign to the surface so yay for you.

Hv3 - Not surprised ~_^

ZF - I like your response! LOL111111

see, those are the kinda deals that if you take one day your hangin from the empire state building sayin how she owns you.. not very tempting to me... while true that this is a tamer universe, doesn't mean that there could be unsavory things i wouldn't want to do (albeit probably with a cute lil assistant who's merchandisable)

I think it's more like you'd occassionally wind up being a test subject for one of Mara's backfiring plots.

*places the soujinki(tm) in front of duck* (what does it turn into? Who knows...)

But think of how nifty it can be... can you imagine that one night where you have a dark desire then out of a stormcloud of fluffy sparklies Musa the bishi demon appears?

I'd do it in a heartbeat. So what if becoming a demon is the price? I kind of follow Zero's thinking on this. I've always though immortality to be an interesting concept, and I already tend to make most people's lives miserable, so why not combine the two . . .

I, most likely, would have to say no. As much as the idea tempts me, I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I submissed...myself to a life of servitude, to anything, or anyone.

OwS:

The reason why I accepted is because, in this universe, it's actually a good deal. Besides the immortality bit, actually being a "slave" is unlikely. To being a demon? Sure. But Hild isn't likely to want anything more to do with you afterward, perhaps with the odd call-in for something every here and there. Otherwise you can run around doing whatever you want. And Mara? She can't tell you what you do with yourself, which is why I would recommend wishing to be a demon so you can choose your own strengths and weaknesses and stuff. And if you're the scheming kind, get noticed by the "Almighty" for good deeds and even Hild's contract will not stand against his will if he thinks that you would be better as a turncoat. ;p

Although having demon blood in this series seems to inspire certain attitude characteristics, it seems more like it only applies with Urd, basing off of what I know what has happened to her and what Mara and Senbei (that's his name, isn't it?) have done. And you must admit that even Skuld seems like a demon sometimes. ^_^;

eh the ah my goddess demon's are pretty tame, at least action wise they haven't done anything overdestructive since there is the treaty, all and all due to the amount of restrictions on them all the events turn more into a game of wits then anything, even then when corrupting people they don't make them disgustingly evil. so overall ah my goddess demons aren't the best example of having to sell your soul out too..
