My first poll. Yay

I went and saw the Barber Of Seville the other day. And I thought I would see your opinions.

I haven't been to an opera, but I would like to go at least once so I can properly ascertain my opinion of it. Though I have my suspicion that I'll never get a chance to see a live opera.

I got lucky with my school. We are pretty active in all forms of fine art. Many musicals, plays, concerts per year. There is a Art Charter school next door. All in all I got lucky. The other operas I would love to see is Carmen and any and all of Mozart's. Expesially Magic Flute.

I am a frequent listener of live opera broadcasts but have not attended opera since childhood as it is indeed expensive

my favorite opera is Boris Gudunov by my favorite composer: Modest Mussorgsky ... with my favorite movements being the successive "Long live our Tsar Boris Feodorovich!" "My Soul is Sad!" and "I stand supreme in power"

I am a big fan of Russian, Slavic, Soviet type forms of composition... opera obviously included... thus Mussorgsky is my favorite in the orchestral world too with his Pictures at an Exhibition, highlighted by the mighty "Great Gate of Kiev"

by the way tomorrow (17th of May) is my birthday... you can all buy me a plane ticket to San Diego for the performance there (buy me a ticket for that too) in Feb 2007 (oh and you can also buy me a hotel room too) k, thanks ;)

(you can hear a sound byte in the background with some of the coronation scene)

(I swear everyone spells it in a different way: Gudnov, Gudunov, Godunov, Godnov...etc...)

I attended an English language phantom of the opera comedy as a kid.

That kind of stuff I'll go to.

But for people just moaning in languages I can't understand, in an age old plot I don't care for? Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnah.

moaning.... MOANING?

:x :x :x

rawr!

and if you don't understand the words, then at least understand the human voice as an instrument. Heck I've always valued the actual sound of the voice over lyrics. And opera's in english are just annoying, really... not a language meant to be sung...

I simply love opera. I've seen opera versions of Macbeth and A Midsummer's Night Dream, and I've also seen Götterdämmerung (The Twilight of the Gods) by Richard Wagner, Turandot, by Puccini, Don Giovanni, by Mozart, and many, many random smaller french operas. The french are magnificent at opera . . .

Ah but the Italians have such a better launguage for it. The language itself is almost singing.

German, Russian and that family are the perfect languages for insulting or getting something across forcefully, but for singing, I think Italian and French are better suited because they are predominately softer sounds. The sounds roll better then many of the harder syllables of the Germanic languages do.

Of course, I dont' think English is a bad singing language at all, nor any language, for that matter. They all have their intricacies and things that have to be looked at, but any language (or even just random sounds) can be quite beautiful.

Well yes, each language has its intracacies. I however, find that french is suited to opera because the language is so beautiful, even when being simply spoken. It rolls off the tongue, and blends and melds like no other language, and ofr me, this is intensified my tenfold when it is being sung. The Italians may have invented opera, but I believe the French perfected it. (although, there were several German operas that I really liked)

Are there any operas in french? Or rather any operas anybody have heard about it french? I know that most are in italian and many are in german but then my knowledge about opera comes to an end. Still i don't recall hearing about an opera in french ever.

Also for those who say that french sounds nice, have you ever heard every day french or for that matter a french politician speak? That doesn't sound all that nice it goes between sounding like a preteen girl whining to a person with a cold trying to speak italian. At least it sounds that way to me. It is just like how everyday german doesn't at all sound commanding.
