This is the genre I am obsessed with. Movies, books, anything. I know more science fiction than any other genre. Some people say that you can tell how bad of a nerd/geek you are by what you call things.
Lately I have been reading Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlen, L. Ron Hubbard, and some other classics.

L. Ron Hubbard? Scientology for the lose.
Asimov has some really good stuff (Robot Dreams), but for the most part, it's rather dense and not quite as interesting as some other science fiction.
Philip K. Dick is really great, though his subject matter tends to be a bit repetitive, i.e. post-apocalyptic strictly controlled society.
Orson Scott Card is win.
William Gibson is a very good writer, though he's a bit hard to follow at times. I'd reccomend Burning Chrome, Pattern Recognition, and Neuromancer by him.
Kurt Vonnegut is also a great writer, though he doesn't stick solely to science fiction. I'd reccomend Cat's Cradle, Breakfast of Champions, and Welcome to the Monkey House.

I'm not much of a reader, so I don't think that I've ever read a science fiction book. And while I tend to say "sci-fi" for ease, personally I prefer saying "science fiction."

Hmmmm. The only "sci-fi" books that I read in the 80s were those "chose your own adventure" books.

It depends. Sci-Fi is kind of the Star Wars / Star Trek stuf. Or Anne McCaffrey - things that are more SciFi/Fantasy.
Science Fiction would be people like Pohl, Bova, Asimov, Clarke, and so on.

Proper Sc-Fi to me includes Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein, Herbert, Harry Harrison (the Stainless Steel Rat!), Jack Vance, and the other classic authors. There isn't as much Sci-Fi written these days, but I would say that Greg Egan's bleeding edge hard SF and Peter F Hamilton's hard SF-space opera books are among the best.

When I am sopeaking I use SciFi usually, in writing I normally use SF.
