The irony of Thanksgiving for me...

Postby May-chan » Wed Nov 22, 2006 5:03 pm

everyone seems to think of Thanksgiving as the day of the year that you eat the most...

but for me, I think it is the day I eat the least. Why? Because while everyone else is buzzing about preparing for the one meal, the kitchen is off limits (unless you are preparing something) so I don't really get anything other than a few appetizers in the morning and early afternoon... then there is the fact that I have a small stomach. I am a person who eats several (usually six) small meals a day rather than the classic "big three" (mind you several small meals a day is in fact healthier). And after having such eating patterns for a long time I really cannot stomach giant meals... next is the fact that I really don't like half the stuff that is served at thanksgiving dinner... turkey is fine, stuffing is meh - just a little, same with mashed potatoes, I hate gravy, I hate that cranberry blob stuff, not too fond of jello or jello-like things, rolls are good, casseroles and whatnot are ick, and I am not a huge dessert fan... I don't like pie at all...

so in all, while everyone else is eating their fill... I really only get about 1000 calories in total on thanksgiving day.

boo!

now I'd eat more if the food was more to my liking...

lets swap turkey for salmon
screw the stuffing how about some rice
gravy is made of ick and fat, why not have some steamed broccoli instead
rolls can stay... but how about some variety of breads...
mashed potatoes can stay, but how about some plain baked potato
no casserole... lets just have some grilled peppers, zucchinis, and whatnot instead
cranberry ick out the window... why not some fresh cut canteloupe?
jello, blah... how about some pasta
pies? pssh... just give me a Dr. Pepper...
oh and ham? ... lets have lamb instead... make it... gyros! love em!
Why not some german spaetzel and sauerbraten as well?
Lookit my art n' stuff >_< !!!

I think that's funny. XD

While I agree with you on several points (like gravy and cranberry ick, for example), to replace pie with Dr. Pepper? The contents of Dr. Pepper are probably worse, overall. XD I guess you're mostly basing stuff off of texture, appearance and taste rather than nutrition. You just toss in nutrition when it's true, and can add more substance to your reason for not liking it. ;p

But, yeah, I don't eat much on days like this one. I'll probably just have some turkey, green beans, mashed potatoes and stuffing. No dessert, as far as I know. The only exception to this meal in comparison to most others, is the variety of food. Most of my meals consist of just one thing, maybe two. Just one meal a day, so I have to eat enough to last, or as much as I should eat depending on the amount versus the other stomachs that need their share.

I am a very healthy eater... but I allow myself spoils every once in awhile (thus the Dr. Pepper, sauerbraten, lamb...)

I see... I'd be a healthy eater as well, if there was anything healthy to eat. XD The best thing around, most of the time, is probably tuna fish. But, sometimes we actually have some real fruit around. Like bananas, apples, oranges, grapes and melons. But that doesn't happen very often.

I'm glad that we don't have anything like Thanksgiving over here in Europe. One less holiday to worry about. ;D

I have a cure!

Good thing that our taste heavily relies on our sense of smell. :P

According to Wikipedia...

Many factors affect taste perception, including:

Aging
Hormonal influences
Genetic variations - See Phenylthiocarbamide
Oral temperature
Drugs and chemicals
CNS Tumours (esp. Temporal lobe lesions)
It is also important to consider that flavor is the overall, total sensation induced during mastication (e.g. taste, touch, pain and smell). Smell (olfactory stimulation) plays a major role in flavor perception.

I wonder what kinds of hormones, oral temperatures, ages etc. make spinach seem tasty? @_@

Well to me the whole idea of Thanksgiving is being thankful. I would say, eat what makes you happy, especially if you are alone.

It is amusing here. You cannot get Turkey normally and usually have to special order it (at like $30 a pound pre cooked). Most Thanksgiving celebrators I know here go to KFC for chicken.

For me I have most of the fixings, except the cranberry sauce. For me I think it is as much a symbolic link to home as the food itself.

Either way, I hope you have a good day.
LorekeeperEirien: That is quite possibly the most hillariously disturbing comment I've heard all day

My family never did the "giving thanks" part. It was just about being together and gorging ourselves on the massive feast...and cranberry sauce is my favorite side. XD
