A hero that's renowned for saving many lives can only save the next life if they sacrifice their own; so, what would be their best option?

Poll ended at Tue Jan 16, 2007 4:53 pm

A hero's life is but a game of chance, and it's only a matter of time before he dies because he MUST attempt to save every person despite the risks.

What should a hero do?

Postby Mitera Nikkou » Tue Dec 19, 2006 4:53 pm

I'm tempted to do a barrel roll... But, unless the hero's trying to save a very large number of people, and there's no sign of danger for them or anyone else in the future, I think that a hero should try their best but make sure that they come out of it alive, so they can do more in the future.

Do a Barrel Roll, and cheat fate. Seriously, a hero should try to do his best, but be willing to sacrifice his life to save a single person...He can't just let somebody die.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
Even if this 'hero(ine)' was going to save my life, I wuld rather he/she live to save others who would be better off alive.

But, when they die, then they'll let other people die in their absence, and they won't be around to even try to do anything about it. In countless comics, heroes have authors that save their butts when they put them on the line, so they can save another day. And while there could possibly be other heroes to do the job, no real hero would be resigned to let a now-smaller number of heroes handle the work. They'd rather want to still be in that number, wanting to save lives. I can understand sacrificing your life for a whole bunch of people... But for one, or a few?

You see, when people ask, "where have all of the heroes gone", they'll be told: "They wasted their potential by saving a few, making the remaining many to fend for themselves."

This is so much fun to think about. XD

Since I don't really believe in chance, I suppose a hero will do everything in his power to save as many people as possible, but not so reasonably as to destroy himself when there could be more done for the big picture.

A bit of this and that.

When a hero dies nobly, his death inspires others by his example, and creates new heroes in his place. It serves as a beacon, and a ray of hope.

But that's not really a guarantee. In fact, most will probably pine away for someone else to become a new hero, or people without the qualifications to be a hero will be inspired (such as those wanting fame, who want to prove themselves, and the like). You're more likely to inspire a bunch of reckless idiots that could potentially make things worse than help anything.

Also, if the hero dies, that leaves a window of opportunity for the non-good-doers to do their thing, making things worse for however long it takes to get a decent replacement.

Who needs guarantees? The hero should try to save everyone and survive him/herself. Anything else is surrender.

Bet you could have guessed I'd say that.
Tell me, for what price would you give up hope?
Would you follow the will o' the wisp of the brightest morning star?
How far?

There are not heroes before actions.

The status is simply a result of the action.

You can't be a hero without doing something heroic first.

You may or may not die...

You know, Beyond pretty much got it...the fact that a hero is willing to do something utterly, completely stupid like that is sorta the reason they are heroes...

Firemen, Police, Secret Service Agents, etc...Don't usually think about saving the next one, or running into the NEXT blaze.

Well, so much for Superman and the like, then... I guess Bowie was right about being a hero. :P
