There are instructions, though they are relatively simple. They each have a small pilot chute, and you toss that in the air when you reach a certain height. If that doesn't work, you pull the string, releasing the emergency chute. Deploying the reserve parachute also cuts the pilot chute and main chute. There is NO automatic deployment system for the reserve chute. A note scrawled by Scientia mentions that it was too buggy.
Neko, having read this, has already jumped. However, on the page after the one Neko's dropped manual has, there's a notice to be careful while jumping over cities and such, since there are numerous hazards, like planes. And being low to the ground.
