Cassia stopped abruptly at the foot of the stairs. The erstwhile owner of this house and parent of one of her new friends was nowhere to be seen. But sitting demurely on the living room couch, deep blue hair twisted up in a bun and quietly sipping a cup of tea, was...
"Mom?" Cassia gave her a perplexed look as she descended the last step. "What- what are you doing here?" Oh, no, I must be in even deeper trouble than I thought....
The mother in question daintily dabbed the corners of her mouth with a napkin before responding. "I simply stopped in to see an old friend. Yes, we knew each other well, in our youth back in Japan...." Cassia's mother hadn't moved to the United States until her twenties; she visited this country as one of the lead performers of a touring ballet troupe, and fell in love with both the country itself and an American man. When the trouple left, she stayed, and currently taught ballet at an area dance studio with a good reputation. "As you can see, she is elsewhere at the moment. Which is just as well, because I need to talk to you. Sit down, have some tea with me."
"Uh... sure, Mom...." Cassia sat down uncertainly, not sure what to think; she sipped the cup pressed into her hand automatically. The other hand fiddled with the medallion silver and red medallion.
Mom's eye saw what she was playing with. Her eyes changed. She looked at her daughter with an expression mixed of pride and sympathy. "Ah, I'd wondered...." She paused to sip more tea before continuing. "You got it too."
"Uh, got what, Mom?" What, she knows something about this?
Mom sighed. "There are things about my youth you don't know, dear. One of those things is that when I was slightly younger than you, I, amongst a few other girls, was chosen to join a small group of defenders- super heroines, if you will- to protect Tokyo against an alien threat. We were given magical powers via infusing our DNA with that of unusual exotic animals. I was bonded with a blue Lorikeet.... But needless to say, this was no easy task for a group of teenage girls, but it did not last forever. Life went on. But apparently, the abilities remained in our DNA...."
"Wh-what are you trying to say, Mom?" Cassia set down her teacup, leaning forward. "That- that what- happened last night has something to do with this crazy story- it sounds like something out a comic! Or a cartoon show!"
Mint laughed lightly. "A cartoon show? Indeed it was. Someone actually based a tv series around our adventures. There were definite- liberties- taken, but I shall not explore those at present.... But now, the show is all that most people remember. All except the few of us involved. And now, it seems that the DNA infusion had an unforeseen side effect, on us as well as those directly involved in creating it. The animal transfusion abilities were passed on to our children....
She continued as Cassia stared, mouth agape. "Honestly, I had wondered whether or not you would ever learn of any of this. One of the scientists who created the project alluded to the possibility just a few years ago, but well, none of us knew for sure. And you never showed any sign of following in my footsteps in other areas...." It had long been a bone of contention that Cassia had not inherited her mother's pursuit of ballet and love of graceful, gracious things, instead preferring more direct athletics and a free-and-easy tomboy lifestyle. She took the medallion out of Cassia's unresisting hand. "Ah, yes, this looks so much like my own transformation charm.... Red is your color. It seems fitting. What creature do you ally with? A beautiful red cardinal bird, perhaps?"
"Actually, Mom, I'm a fox...." I can't believe we're even having this conversation.... This is so weird....
"Oh." Just for a second, Mint looked as though she could be a little bit disappointed. "Either way, though, I must say that this is both a great honor and a great responsibility for you. I trust in you to perform well."
OOC: Okay, breaking off now to keep this conversation from getting TOO excessive, and to allow for other people to add on things.
