I agree. Especially if you can be the kind of race that Mito is. A cute chibi race with a lifespan that can last thousands and thousands of years... The space pirating would be very interesting for a long time! Mya-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaaaa!

I ended up picking pirates, but not because of the recent Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Instead, I pick pirates because in a center game of Exalted, my group has been making great use of pirates to achieve our objectives.

Also, with the magic of one of the people in the game, plus two other characters' abilities in martial arts and stealth, we're working on creating an army of magically enhanced, ninja pirates.

All of creation will bow before our might. XD

*Sigh* Pirates are so underappreciated. Heck, they have an entire religion based off of them, if you've heard of Pastafarianism. Do ninjas have a religion? I think NOT!

Besides, how can you not adore Luffy? He's the ultimate image of pirate awesomeness! Plus, you aren't bound by a stupid code of honor. You get to pillage and rob and mutiny and all of that fun stuff! Sure, Ninjas get shuriken, but that's not gonna make me change my vote. Yo Ho Ho all the way!

Ah, but they are bound by their contracts, no? Looking at it formally, they are almost definitely lawful neutral, while pirates are definitely chaotic.

Actually Florina, pirates are extremly bound by a honor amongst theives of sorts and were known to exercise quite a bit of a democratic system. Heck, the elected the captains of the boat a good deal of the time if they were unsatisfied with the job of the owner of the boat at being a captain. Well at least a good deal of the older kinds of pirates.

Uh... "lawful" would refer to one's abiding by the law of the governing body, not a business contract. Especially a contract that would be unlawful in the eyes of the government. And "honor" certainly had nothing to do with it.
For that matter, many pirates worked as privateers for the colonial powers, so they were essentially mercenaries.
You seem to be looking at it from the freedom perspective, not the legal one. Which is fine.
