Genno chuckled. "Yeah.. What's normal for us is strange for others.. Are those things kinda like bread? They look.. Strange." He cocked his head to the side, staring at the donuts.

Elise nodded. "Yes indeed. Maybe that's why we hit it off.... We both grew up outside the 'norm.' And you've never eaten a doughnut?" she exclaimed, looking at him wide-eyed. "Poor sweetie- you've been deprived! Doughnuts are wonderful. They'rre sort of bread-ish, yes, but it's a sweet bread- see, the round ones with holes in them are fried, and the round ones without holes I'm not sure of, because they've got fillings in them. Usually either whipped cream, custard, or some sort of jelly. And then you put sugar or cinnamon or chocolate or glaze or other good things on them.... Custard ones with chocolate icing are my favorites. Here, I'll get a few extra so you can try them!" An assorted variety of doughnuts went into the bag. "We can munch on these after shopping, so we don't get hungry.... And if you don't mind me asking, what did you eat at home?"

"Uh.. Well... We had freshly baked bread every day... Carrots grew well. If we were lucky, some of the other 'trainees' brought back meat or food from the city... I went a few times, and realized how wasted my life there was.."

"Wasted? I'm sorry you felt that way.... If it's any consolation, fresh bread daily sounds lovely.... But you never said there were others being trained besides you before. What were they like? Were you friends with any of them? Is that how you learned your card tricks?"

"Yeah.. One guy taught me the card tricks.. But he left soon afterwards. I improved on what little I got, using my natural ability ta control flame.. But I never really got to test it out. You were my first audience... And I'm damn glad I thought you were the most beautiful girl I'd ever seen." He grinned at her... Then put a loaf of french bread in the basket.

Elise just stopped in her tracks, color flooding her face. "You did?" Her voice came out in a little squeak. "Really? Honest to goodness, really, you- you thought that? About- about me?!" She was plainly pleased to hear this, but just as plainly floored by it. No boy had ever called her beautiful before....

"..Huh? Of course I did.. You're a 'little' short.. But.." He shrugs. "I can't put it into words, y'know? You're.." He sighs, looking at the floor. "You know what I'm tryin' to get out, right?"

It took a minute to find her breath. No doubt the two of them were creating rather a show for those around them, but well, she couldn't bring herself to care. "I- I th-think I understand, yes," she managed, voice still a little breathless. "I'm sorry- it's just- no one's ever said anything like that to me before- other than family, and that- that's different-" She gulped. "I'm sorry," she said softly. "For being this way. I was just... bowled over. Happy, but- well- you know...."

"Stunned? Don't worry 'bout it. Hang around me long enough, and I'll comment on every part of your body." He winked at her, then looked around at the other people. "Shall we get going? We can continue over some food."

If anything, her color got even brighter at his comment. "Y-you really are outrageous, you know that?" she managed. "But somehow, I love you anyway...." And once the shock wore off, the fact that he found her beautiful made her feel like she was walking on air. It was... she didn't know what to call it. "Yes, let's keep going, talk more later, yes-" Think of something to talk about now that won't make me sound like a fool- "Maybe- when we get home and eat- you can- show me how to do those card tricks? Or more of them?" Her voice still had a touch of that squeak to it, but there was elation laden underneath, now.

Genno just raised an eyebrow at the outrageous comment. "Yeah.. I think I could show ya how to do 'em. Nothing to it, especially since you've already got some ki flow going on.."

"I do?..." Elise blinked for a moment. "Oh, yes, the spirit energy. I suppose that would count. Thanks so much!" She looped both arms through one of his again, giving a little squeeze. "Let's hurry up and finish this shopping so we can go home!"

"A few more things. We should get some meat of some kind, and some vegetables, and we'll need milk, eggs, and cheese, oh, and some sugar and cinnamon if we're going to make French toast. Then we'll be all set." Her stomach rumbled again, more insistently. "Yes, yes, I know," she told it irritably. "You'll get a doughnut in a few minutes, so be quiet!"
