The Celestial Bureaucracy

Postby Kether » Sat Sep 22, 2007 1:04 pm

This is alittle complicated.... its very loosely based on Chinese Folk religion beliefs and Taoist views of the universe. This is not meant to be an accurate portrayal of those religious beliefs but rather taking loose concepts there of for purposes of playability, humour and so on.

It will also make use of other terminology taken from other religions ecleticly so as to sound authorative and create a certain amount of internal consistancy. These will not be the real world definitions but rather definitions I will be providing in context. They will be loosely based on real world concepts.

there my Disclaimers out of the way.

The basic premise, the Multiverse of this little rp is held together fundimentally by the acts of millions of little gods. Each and every action is over seen by some personalized force on some level. In theory each and every single thing is a part of this cosmic order, every hurricane, every war, even the sufferings in hell are part of the Celestial order.

However the Celestial Bureaucracy has the failings of real world Bureaucracies its corrupt, mismanaged, bogged down in bizare rules that only make sense to whoever made it.

Problem the second whenever there are laws.. there are law breakers. In this universe the laws of science or sorcery are.. well litteral laws.. Some worlds you can't travel faster than the speed of light.... so when someone does they have to be brought in.

OF course since there's a certain amount of corruption.. and just plain miscmmunication what is supposed to be often ends up seriously off course from how things are..

This is where the player characters would come in, they will be celestial magestrates. Cops upholding the random and crazy rules of destiny, that barely make sense even to them. Of course this being a New and Poorly funded division, none of the members asside from its head are senior bereaucrats.. rather they are "Given the honor of joining the heavenly order" whether they like it or not...

Generally the PCs should have no real knowledge of how ways of the gods.. really work. They might come from a world of Sorcery or Spaceships.. or Post Apocalyptic radiation granting powers, or maybe from the real world or something like it as sometime. Generally speaking they will be given random new destinies that work within the way of heaven. SO just give a bit of a backstory, some description... and we go from there.

((All right. This sounds complicatedly fun.))

Name: Braelith
World: Fantasy/Arcane based
Race: Human on his world (*doesn't know if that changes*)
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Previous Occupation: Religious representative.

Sure he did his job. Sure he was pretty up-to-date on his religious information and his ethics were sound. Sure he was fairly well-known on his own world...but this...
It hadn't taken him long to realize that he had died or passed over...or perhaps just plane-shifted. Whatever it was he was here now...and called to serve in this Holy Order. Why him? What had he done to be called to such a lofty position?
It's not about how much dough you make -- it's about how delicious a pizza you eat at the end.

"Freeze!" Alan yelled, raising his gun level with the thug's face. The man, hopped up on some kind of drug, spun around in alarm and raised his own firearm.

"Put the gun down," He said simply, not mentioning that he was a cop. A druggy like this would likely shoot an officer on sight. Had, too: Alan's partner lay on the ground nearby, bleeding from a hole in his leg. "Put the gun down, now," he repeated. "I don't want to shoot you, but I won't hesitate if you keep pointing that damn thing in my face."

"S-stay back!" the man yelled. "Get outta my head, you ----ing monster!" His arms jerked wildly, and the man fired off a shot in a seemingly random direction. Moments later, a woman could be heard screaming in pain.

"Dammit, I said drop it, you ------!" Alan let his temper get the better of him and shot the man square in the chest. Forget whatever hearings and "disciplinary actions" they laid on him later. This guy was nuts; he had to be stopped. Unfortunately for the blonde-haired cop, a shot to the heart wasn't enough to stop him: he remained standing despite the fatal wound, his attention now riveted on Alan.

The thug spoke again, this time with no trace of madness in his voice: "You think you can stop me with that little pea shooter?"

That was when Alan saw it: the distortion in the air around him, the darkness in front of him. And within that darkness lay something terrible, something beyond imagining. He dropped his gun and retreated several steps, trying to escape this... thing's gaze, yet transfixed by it. He continued to stare into its eyes - if they could be called eyes - even as the bullet entered his skull.

Bullseye, was the last thing he heard as he fell.

He was drowning in the dark, for a time - not that there were such things as Time in this place. Eternity passed in the blink of an eye, a single moment stretched on forever... and the being who had been Alan Richards in life suffered torments that would surely kill him, had he not been dead already. He was its... its plaything, now, an object to be used at a whim. He wanted to fight it, somehow, resist it. but it was no use. He was in the dark, and that was where it thrived...

Something stirred around him. Was it coming back to torture him some more? No, it was... light... glorious light pouring into the abyss from every direction. He could hear its screams of agony - dear god, he could hear! - in the distance. Something was killing it, something was--

Alan sat up quickly, gasping for air that he had not breathed for so long. It was bright around him. He couldn't see a thing...
