Which of the two is more curious?

Postby Mitera Nikkou » Wed Jan 09, 2008 9:09 pm

I was thinking about one of the versions of the Pandora story and I wondered what others thought about this whole curiosity thing. I even left an easy answer to make your escape with. What I'm more interested in, however, are arguments that weigh in for one or the other that at least make it seem possible that one or the other is more curious.

I'm still considering this and that, and I probably won't vote until I see a few opinions and/or ideas flung around. Don't disappoint me. You wouldn't like me when I'm disappointed.

Got it? U_U

I guess I went with the "easy" answer. XD; Both! I mean, I think it really does depend. It depends both on the person and the situation. Someone might be curious about one thing, but not give a foof about something else. Or maybe they're curious about eeeeverything, or about nooooothing! :o *Shrug* I dunno, I can't really see why one gender would be more or less curious than the other.

Now, if it was, say, humans vs. catpeople, then the choice would be OBVIOUS. And it's very sad, really. There's so many tragic curiosity-related deaths among the catpeople. ;_;

I would say that like most other questions about gender it is mostly cultural. Historically curiousity has predominantly been a male trait i would think given that men were more allowed to express it than females, though the degree to which this is the case depends on the time and place of course. Today, however, i would say that it depends in a large degree on how traditional gender roles the person was raised with and in an equally large degree on what ambitions said person has. I would even go so far as to say that among the high-education segment of the population this women have a tendency to be more curious, for a variety of reasons. One is that among there still is enough tints of feminism in this part of the population that many women feel that they have more to prove than men. Another would be that the virtues of the educational system, and thus the virtues people are raised to associate with knowledge and the acquisition of it, seem to favor girls or at least the way girls are raised to behave. And by the very perception of the success of women in this part of the population can be seen to have a stimulating effect on girls willingness to express behavior like this that has typically been held as being the province of men. And by the same token the sense of domain loss has increasingly marginalized teenage boys and young men who on average are worse educated than teenage girls and young women, which will carry over when they grow older. I do think that this tendency is stronger in Scandinavia than it is in the US, at least if the US is seen as a whole and not as a set of regions with different educational, economical and cultural make-up.

So i say that both are equally curious by nature, but that it depends on the culture which gender has a statistical edge in expressing this curiousity. I might be wrong, but it seems to be the best assumption based on the material at hand...though i haven't done any formal research on it.

Well the first is it's my crazy oppinion, the second came a few moments after the first and that was to stirr up the poll, because i have nothing to back it. It's just what I think from my subjective experience.

I put both because if I chose one or the other, it would be considered sexist. Or that's what the tell me.

For real, I put both because it does depend. I know a girl who doesn't really care, and a guy (her boyfriend, incidentally) who wants to know how EVERYTHING works.

Christina:

That's more or less what I've been considering, too. Nurturing can change, so I've been seeing what kind of nature could impose enough influence to have an effect on curiosity. And since there are physiological differences between the sexes... If only we knew every pro and con to know how the scales are tipped.

Anyone ever notice in horror movies it's always the females who open the door despite the ominous music and heavy breathing sounds tipping her off that there is some monster waiting for her on the other side?

But on the other hand, you'll also see a lot of females scream in terror and/or run away at the slightest thing, not wanting to find out at all.

I wouldn't base anything on movies, though. While stereotypes do reflect a hint of a trend, it's still exaggerated.

Both can be as curious as they want. It's more a variance of the personalities of people, rather than gender.

Some people are just more likely to be more curious than others due to their personality.
