"So, the statue wasn't alive. It was you all along?" The little girl looked up at Kale with saucer-like eyes. He nodded and placed a gentle, leathery hand on her shoulder. His features were concealed by a grayish green hunter's cloak, so as not to startle her. "Of course my child. I only kept myself hidden because grown-ups don't like the way I look. They would hunt me down if they saw me." The little girl gasped. "Oh no! But that's so mean! You haven't done anything!" Kale chuckles lightly. "I know, the world can be mean sometimes. But that's why I want to help you. When grown-ups see you, they see a street rat. You know what I see?" She shakes her head. "I see a pretty girl with a promising future. I want the rest of the world to see you how I see you."
The little girl smiles, teary eyed. "But how? Those boys only talk to me because they're scared of me." Kale shakes his head and crouches down so his hooded face is level with hers. "So make them not afraid. Show them how brave you are, show them how smart you are. But most importantly, show them how beautiful you are." The little girl looks down at the dirt in their little back alley. "But everyone says I'm too skinny." True enough, the girl was wasting away slowly, as homeless children are wont to do. "So eat," Kale suggests. "I do..." the little girl mumbles. Kale shakes his head. "Not enough. I know you pick through garbage too. I'm talking about full meals of bread and gravy and milk." The little girl licks her lips. "You'd like that, wouldn't you?" She nods her head eagerly. "Then take it. If you see a fruit vendor, take some fruit. If you see a baker, take a roll or two. If you see a man with a fat wallet, take that and buy your food. The possibilities are endless."
The little girl looks up hesitantly. "Isn't that stealing?" Kale nods. "It is, but it's only food, and it's only enough to keep you fed. Those people waste their food and money every day, literally throwing it to the pigs and rats. Why shouldn't some of it go to you instead?" She looks over her shoulder. "What if I get caught?" Kale smiles and tousles her hair lovingly. "That's where I come in. With my help, you'll never get caught, not even if you try." She smiles and nods her head. "That's a good girl. Now, let's get started."
