So, I got RPG Maker XP and...

Postby Moonlit Naiad » Wed Feb 04, 2009 10:49 am

... over the past week, played around with it (A LOT -- as in, other than sleep/school, did very little other than it) and put together an escape-type game with it.

It's currently only available for download on my site at http://hoshizora.midnightaurora.com/mainpage.php?site_id=200&page_id=Downloadable_Games, as while I think I got most of the cases of words wrapping off the screen or missing brackets in control codes (for name colours), there's probably a few others that I overlooked, or possible other bugs. Once people have taken a look at it and pointed out bugs or typos (no red-squigglies in that, either... :p) for me to fix, I'll see about putting it up on the TFGamesSite.com 4shared folder as well.

I can say two things though: next RPG Maker game I do is probably not going to do character names in different colours (got way, way, way tired of typing "\C[\V[0019]]\N[1]\C[0]:"), and that the next game is definitely not going to have almost two dozen different endings...

That, and I'll be a little more judicious in spending my time on other things as well -- being snowed in for three days, though, gave me plenty of time to fuss with it. ^^

Anyway, take a look, if you like, and have fun. ^^

hmm saw your post at tf/tg games already was gonna post there but shrug like it really matters which forum i post in.

either way I'm impressed, i thought about making one myself however the tedious nature of it all turned me off after like a week of working on one(that and i have more other things to occupy my time then i care to think about). Either way I'll try going through it in-depth when i have more time but good to see your still at it.
the anti-thesis of myself... come see, feel, know the truth beyond truths it'll just cost your soul.....

Yeah, I'm taking it slower on this next one, which is intended as a more traditional-type RPG instead of an escape-type.

Though, given the general lack of interest for this one here, I'll probably only announce on LJ and TFGamesSite. ^^;;

You ought to be able to change that with Ruby, you know...

@Selena: That would necessitate learning Ruby... And with so many other things on my plate right now.... >.>

Also, put a listing of the endings and methods of obtaining then on the site LJ blog at http://community.livejournal.com/hoshizora_site/ (direct link to post, contains spoilers) for those having trouble on how to get them.

Hmm, I'm thinking about trying this out, as I've never really played one with RPG Maker XP, before. However, I've got Vista, and there's also a new version of the RPG Maker out. Should I get this RPG Maker VX instead of XP and then play it?

Hmm, well, I've got RPG Maker VX, and it won't open it...do I need to get the XP RTP or whatever and somehow use that with VX, or what?

You won't need to open in RPGMaker, unless you want to see how it is put together. (And it probably won't open in VX due to the difference in how VX and XP treat character sprites, amongst other things...)

Just download/install the XP RTP (link is in the readme), and run the game.exe in the "escape" folder (made by running Escape.exe self-extracting archive).

Hmm, well, I downloaded and installed the XP RTP, and it gives me some kind of weird error when I open it.

Haha. That figures. XD I wonder though...can't remember whether or not I've tried it before or not, but does RPG Maker XP work with Vista?

It does work on Vista, since I made it on Vista. ^^

Might be an issue with User Account Control, or whatever it's called -- I never had any problems getting it to work on Vista, but searching Google shows all sorts of issues that people have had (though, many of them are old, it seems?)..?

Try right-click and "run as admin" and see if that works?

Well, I have yet to re-download the actual RPG Maker XP, although I did get the XP RTP. After trying that out, I'll either edit this message telling what happens or not. As of right now, it's giving me an error that it can't find a certain .dll file.

Edit: Yay! I've got it working after getting RPG Maker XP!
