Emily frowned at the pulling sensation inside him. He had a good idea what it was, and he was still somewhat afraid of it, even if he knew he couldn't stop it. He went to the office and watched for a moment as things got cleared away. He rummaged through the office supplies and found a legal notepad and a pen. He took them outside, not sure if he could take seeing his career being dismantled in front of him much longer. He sat in a chair in the hall next to the water cooler, crossing his legs above the knees to support the pad as he wrote on it.
Once he started, he didn't stop. He filled the pages with his little tricks of the trade, the things he had learned through experience and a few options he knew were going to do well soon. Every single thing he knew about how to excel in the downturn, he wrote on that legal pad. It took a while for him to be fully satisfied with it, and when he was done he had filled about 10 pages with his notes. Now, even if Susan wiped this knowledge from his mind, which he hoped she wouldn't, Emily knew it would be passed on and preserved.
Waiting for her at the kitchen counter were a few generic but promising looking coloring books, a set of colored pencils, and a plate of brownies with a glass of milk. The brownies were warm, the milk cold, and it smelled good.
