It's a mix of references, originating from Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance where it appears- and me and others realized it was similar to Glorious Solar Saber from Exalted. Basically, it's making a weapon out of pure light energy/essence, and can often do incredibly powerful things. That's not the whole story, but that's the gist of it.
