"Damn it, Dan!" shouted Surge as he bashed his fist untop of his bike. "Julian stay with Greg, Im going" he shouted over the comm and he spun around and headed Southeast. "Stupid idiot, playing hero"
"Let me confirm, your shelter shield is activated?"
"What are you planning?!"
"Your shelter is secure, is it?"
"Of course it is! Just see for yourself how powerless you are!"
"...Roger that."

The boys, now with Dan's diversion, make it safely to Greg's complex. Greg haphazardly parks his bike where it'll be dropped into the garage and without making his usual check for privacy removes the fireplace manhole. He fumbled down halfway and fell the rest.

Surge's pursuit of Dan led him Southeast. *tzzzt* I said don't follow. They'll find us if I don't do this. If you follow me, they'll just catch you too! *tzzzt*

No reply came from the door at Jack's welcome.

Charlotte opened the door into a break room. There were bulletin boards and a coffee machine near the back wall. A few comfy chairs were littered around a table. Leaning against the counter at the back a girl stood sipping from her mug. She was obviously a scientist from the lab coat hanging off the wall. She looked from her thoughts, "How'd you get here little girl?" she questioned and approached. "Where's your class?"

Her blue eyes widen as she looked into the break room and her gaze fell upon the scientist. Her first thought, was to run, but that could ruin everything, and they'd surely be forcing even more pills down her. Biting her lip, she slipped into the room, closing the door behind her as the older girl approached. "I just came from Rehabilitation... the Doctor said I could go, and I was looking for Mary Anne, I thought she might have been in here... ".

She drew a deep breath, and tried to still her racing heart as she smoothed the short pink dress with one hand, and then held the hand out towards the other girl. "I''m Charlotte... or Charly for short. I'm.... new here", she said, and blushed a little. It was going to take some getting used to, having everyone tower over her like this.

"You idiot, you help me and Greg escape! Nows my turn to help YOU escape!" replied Surge. "Try to find a river, forest or somewhere were we can lose them" added Surge as he tried to reach Dan.

*tzzzt* I can't go back! I'm a curse to you guys! I can't do as much, I'm too small! And what happens if I become infectious again?? You guy's'll all die because of me! I can't do that! *tzzzt* With that, she brought the case back down and pulled Greg's pistol and began firing at the chopper. *tzzzt* Please go Surge! While they're still following me! *tzzzt*

***

The fox's charge turned into an acrobatic leap as Chris dodged, his leg coming close to her chest but not making contact. She deftly rolled from her leap and ended standing up with a smile on her face, "Very good." she said. "Now your turn."

***

The girl's expression changed to one of interest, "So YOU'RE that boy that was terrorizing the Southlands." she set her mug down and weaved around the chair in her way to get closer to Charlotte, "You're new name's Charlotte. It's cute. Tell me; can you still remember the things you'd done to those girls? Did you ever lose a moment's sleep knowing how many lives you callously destroyed? Ever?!" her interest had obviously turned to malice and now it was gaining strength, "Could you even look them in the eye as they died? As their mutilated bodies leaked the last life granted to them?" she became quiet for a moment trying to control her anger, but that concious decision fled out the window as tears began to fall from her eyes, "Knowing they had family...sisters...PEOPLE WHO CARED about them as you tore their hopes of seeing anyone they loved EVER again?!" by now she had caused a bit of commotion and some girls had wandered to see what it was about.

As if having to act like a girl wasn't bad enough, she'd forgotten she was going to have to take the blame for things Chris had done, made even worse by the fact she'd been disgusted by his acts too. She thought back to her initial clash with the girl in the village near the clock tower, and how Chris had killed her as she pinned Charlie down.

"I remember a little, but it's getting harder to... and the Doctor said it will all be gone soon... ", she mumbled, her hands grasping the skirt of the pink dress as the teenager came closer. "That's not who I am now... I'm Charly now", she said, trying to calm the older girl down, her eyes widening as she saw the tears. Maybe it would have been better just to ask the Doctor to take her back to Mary Anne.

Her back was pressed against the door she'd came through, the dress rustling softly around her thighs as she squirmed a little, gazing up at the teenager, "That wasn't me... that person doesn't exist anymore... please... ".

Charlotte's pleas for forgiveness went unheard by the ranting girl and she had gotten closer, pressuring Charlotte to try and meld into the door to get further away, "Did it even click in your head that you were doing something wrong? I mean, how heartless did you have to make yourself to stay out in the god-forsaken wasteland and pick off random units of SCOUTS! They hadn't even done anything wrong...*sniff*...they were just doing their job!"

When it looked like she couldn't get any closer to Charlotte's face, she did. She knelt down and grabbed Charly by the shoulders, "I don't care that 'that's not who you are now'." she quoted Charly with more than a hint of sarcasm, "It mattered a month ago! You should have had a soul THEN! You killed my sister!" she cried as she shook Charly. Tears had now begun to flow freely down her face, "How could you...she wasn't even fourteen." her voice became deadly quiet, "She didn't know how to kill...we don't teach girls to kill...we're better...we do the right thing..." her whispered ranting began to crescendo, "She knew her bullets immobilized boys...she knew they couldn't kill...she was innocent."

The mad scientist stood up and pointed down at Charlotte, "Memories or not...you killed her...you stole my sister from me...it's not fair..." her eyes flickered with an insane rage as she reached over and locked the door and grabbed Charlotte's hand to drag her into the middle of the break room, "And it should be." by now she was talking to herself. She picked the small girl up and set her on one of the chairs. "I'll end it now...I won't let the girls mercy reach someone as disgusting as you..." in her mad fit she punched the emergency fire extinguisher glass with her bare fist and pulled the large tank from it's shattered shell. "I won't let it happen." she mumbled as she looked back to Charly with the hint of murder in her eyes.

The eleven year old shook her head as she older girl pressed against her, blaming her for all the kills Chris had made. Even though she'd always considered the girls the enemy, she'd never liked this war, and hated it when she'd been forced to make a kill. A sudden suprised groan left her lips as she was grabbed by the shoulders and found the older girl's face right up against her own before starting to shake her. Her eyes closed, and her small hands grasped at the other girl's clothing, trying to break free of her grasp.

Charly wasn't used to other people being so much stronger, and it was quite a frightening thing to be shaken so hard. "I'm sorry!", she cried, her head starting to hurt from being jolted back and forth, getting dizzy again, and she found she couldn't coordinate her legs properly as she was dragged into the middle of the room after the door was locked. Her dress swished up, her skinny legs kicking out as she was picked up and dumped on the chair, gasping as she saw the teenage smash the safety glass and pull out the fire extinguisher.

She thought she'd known fear in battle, and again in the moment's before losing her maleness... but now she was feeling a fear like she'd never felt before. Never had an enemy been so much bigger and stronger than her, and never before had she had to fight in such an unfamiliar body, with such awkward clothing. Her heart raced as she scrambled down from the chair, the dress swishing as she ran across the other side of the room, looking around in a panic for another way out, while in her head, she longed for the protection of the Hierarch. The girl that for so long had been her biggest enemy, was perhaps now the only one that could keep her alive.

The deranged girl strafed back and forth to keep Charlotte from running around the room, eventually keeping her in check in the corner, "And I'll go to jail...hell they might even put me on the frontlines after what I'm about to do to you; but Shayla's death will have actually meant something. She won't have died so that scum like you can go on living!"

As she was talking a frantic knock came to the door and for a moment the girls eyes showed more fear than hate...but only for a moment. "I better make this quick," she said with a sinister laugh, "before they take me away for remodeling that precious, innocent face of yours!" she raised the fire extinguisher high above her head, preparing to bring its full weight onto Charlotte as the door burst open. Chunks of wood and metal flew toward the coffee machine and dust from the destroyed door and ceiling.

If Charlotte looked up to the scientist, a long needle had buried itself into her neck and a long tube of tranquilizer now dangled from her throat. The fire extinguisher fell back behind her and clattered to the floor as the girl sneered at Charlotte with her last shred of conciousness. The hate that poured from this girl could have been spread on toast as her eyes rolled back into her head and her legs gave up to gravity's influence. As the blast cleared, Mary Anne stepped in; a tranquilizer pistol in her one hand. Her normally happy face had a grim, somber quality to it as she approached the scene slowly, the gun still pointed at the prone girl. She knelt down as she holstered the gun and opened her arms, "Come on Charly. Let's get you out of here." she whispered.

As she did, several girls in police-esque uniforms came in and began taping off the area and dragging the unconcious girl out. One began to bandage her bleeding hand as she was carted out.

Rather puzzled at the lack of response, Jack cautiously heads to the door. He lays his back flat against the wall next to it and pulls out his silenced pistol. The hand with the knife turns the handle and throws the door open. He plants the knife just barely into the doorway, and aims the pistol into the now opened doorway. The angle of his body on the wall and the doorway would make it difficult for intruders to hit him, at least at first.

Charlotte darted back and forth, trying to squeeze passed the other girl, but each time, the teenager got close enough to make her step back, not enough room to get passed without risking a possibly fatal blow from the fire extinguisher. A cry left her lips as the tank was raised high above the girl's head, and even now, she felt so humiliated at what a terrified cry it sounded, like a scared little girl. Her small hands lifted up, a pathetic attempt to block the block, and she squeezed her eyes shut tight.

When it failed to come, she opened one eye just slightly, just in time to see the sneering hatred on the teenager's face. She'd not even killed this girl's sister, but the look sent a chill through her, and made her stomach churn. She knew there were girls that would mercilessly tease her, but this was far worse, the hatred some of them had for her. She watched the girl collapse to the floor, and then lifted her head to see Mary Anne stood there with the gun, and her heart skipped a beat. Jumping over the fallen girl, she rushed to the maid, throwing her skinny arms around her, and burying her face in the girl's frilly dress, clinging to her as the girls in uniform brushed passed.

"I didn't do it... ", she whispered, "I didn't kill her sister... ". She lifted her head just a little, looking up at Mary Anne, and then glancing back, watching the other girls dragging the scientist out, giving a slight nod at the mention of getting out of there. Reluctantly, she lets go of Mary Anne's dress, and instead reaches to hold the girl's hand....

Julian hurries down the hatch after Greg. Being first on the scene, he figures he should do something.

"Greg... the hell happened in there? You need help?"
O Muse!
Sing in me, and through me tell the story
Of that man skilled in all the ways of contending,
A wanderer, harried for years on end...

Greg tried to stand back up but only ended up coughing in the attempt, spraying a small amount of blood onto the floor, "I...was hurt pretty bad by that hybrid..." Julian could see that both of Greg's hands up to his elbows had been soaked in his blood and the floor was gaining that same status. "The bullet from the girls hit me in the knee..." the weird way, his leg had bent when he fell told Julian it had finished breaking. "But the hybrid slashed my stomach..." he struggled to stand up once more.

***

Jack could see empty hallway from the cracked door but one thing caught his eye: a briefcase outside his door now.

***

The first punch landed onto the fox girl and she grunted from the contact. As Chris began to uppercut, her head narrowly dodged the swing. With Chris open she attempted to tackle him.

***

Despite Charlotte's attempt to let go, Mary Anne didn't and simply picked the girl up and began to walk out. "I know you didn't." Mary Anne whispered back as she hugged Charly tight, "I was worried this might happen. If it wasn't her it might have been another." the hallway was silent as Mary Anne walked Charlotte back to her room. Once in, she set the trembling girl on the bed, "Chris did a lot of things we couldn't even imagine...and I know you didn't do them." she tidied up Charlotte's dress and looked her up and down to make sure she wasn't hurt, "Are you all right?"
