Valentine's Day

Postby Haylie » Mon Feb 15, 2010 12:02 am

This is quite a controversial holiday. I'd like to know what you guys think about it.

Me? Maybe it's the fact that I don't have a friend to spend it with, but... it's only slightly less useless than Arbor Day.

Actually, I hate it even more because of all that DAMN PINK!

I'm with the hostilities above. To my mind, if you actually love someone, you don't need a day telling you that you must do something romantic for them right on cue, OR ELSE!!!! And yes, the "or else" seems to be a major factor. There's all these marketing ploys and imagery that build up impossible expectations, and so many people (sadly, mostly women) expect to be wined and dined and gifted so extravagantly, but also think they shouldn't have to SAY anything about their expectations because the person they're with ought to "just know" the perfect thing to do without aid, and if their exacting expectations aren't met, calamity and hissy fits will ensue..... I've seen so many supposed "worst Valentine's ever" stories in which half the tales were basically high-maintance prima donnas complaining about how they didn't get the romantic dinner at the five-star restaurant or jewelry from Tiffany's or whatever, and reading that, I'm thinking, "My God,do you realize what a horrible brat you sound like?" Way too much baggage, way too many elusive expectations, way too many crowds, and way too many pink hearts. Not crazy about hearts, and I can't stand pink. I also loathe cupids. The original Greek god of love, Eros, wasn't no ugly fat baby with aerodynamically inefficient wings....

YOUR FACE.

Yeah, I'm bored. I might as well toss in my two cents, despite what they're not worth these days. Stupid currency.

Making someone feel obligated to show their feelings to someone else, especially through materialistic and monetary means, spits right in the face of what true love is all about. All it does is help to breed the darker side of human interaction, by inspiring such things as greed, envy and hate. For the same reason I don't understand why there must be a specific day to show one's love for either their father or mother, I don't understand this holiday. In each case you can love someone any day; and every day, if you so desired and had the time and energy.

I suppose it could be worse, though: they haven't set aside a "special" day for hugs, yet. That I know of, anyway. Though that's not saying much since someone's life can't be celebrated every day, or just any day, and gift-giving is relegated to specific times and occasions, as if people should be bound to them rather than their own feelings and priorities.

The human race is really stupid.

I've never though that Valentines day sucked.

But then I had one single for the first time in almost 3 years. And now I see the light.

It totally sucks.
