"It's all a large misunderstanding, and a case of overzealous guards. I had money on hand, and I definitely meant to pay for that tomato. Look at the good condition of my clothes, and the dashing characteristics of my hat. I've bathed within the past week! Do I really look like I'd be so down on my luck that I'd stoop to stealing, well, stealing a tomato? I have far more class than that!"

As he speaks, Machina tenses slightly, and stretches his wrist, setting himself up to retrieve one of his hidden blades with a simple flicking motion should he need to run.

She's lead to a large hall filled with other unhappy little girls

He slowly makes his way a bit closer to where she sits and carefully casts another spell. This one aimed at locating where inside her the power was... and what type. Arcane, demonic, holy, shadow, chaos... it had to come from somewhere.

Having been watching for this sort of thing... Aziel stops what he is doing and yawns... looking bored with the proceedings. He turns around and starts walking away... casually slipping through the crowd in a way that tries to break their line of sight on him without making it look like he is running.
O Muse!
Sing in me, and through me tell the story
Of that man skilled in all the ways of contending,
A wanderer, harried for years on end...

"That's 5... 8.... 10... What do you call a number with that many zeroes? More to the point, where would you put it all. I'd be hard pressed to pay a fine only to have the fine without some means of guaranteeing the full sum is actually received.

Also, would you happen to have an itemized bill? I'm sure many of these were donated almost-voluntarily to charitable causes or the like, and it's not stealing if someone died and there was something lying on the ground next to them, is it?"

Figuring the jig is up, Machina decides that he'll at least banter a little bit with the monarch before he finds an appropriate point to make his escape.

*Machina staggers under the weight of the collected books.*

"Of course, we'll need to review every item on a case by case basis. A lot of them were "Legendary priceless sword of Doom" or "State of the art prototype airship ZEUS" and the like. So, if you're content to wait, we can start with....

One loaf of bread exactly 19 years seven months, 3 days and fifteen hours ago. I would protest that I had, in fact, earned that loaf of bread and was being cheated out of my wages. Do you have any counter-witnesses to call?"

"Not in the least. Besides, you yourself said that I have the right to defend myself against e the charges... so of course, such an innocent merchant as myself will plead innocent to every single one, and we can go through one by one, debating each. Would it really do to establish the magnitude of my debt without first giving me the chance you said I'd have to protest the charges. Why! There's probably only a few million in here, we might still be alive by the time this is over."

Machina begins to pace in front of the court, smiling whimsically, his eyes alite with the same excitement he has when he's ordered the men to ship the oars and drift toward a merchant ship. The challenge, the risk, even if he doesn't really get the terms, and the chance to show off are what he lives for.

"Of course, I suppose you could hold me accountable for any problems that befall the empire while we're both busy with the trial, which I'd protest individually, so I guess that the trial couldn't ever end, and I couldn't ever actually be sentenced. Since I would be sentenced if I were guilty, then clearly, I am not guilty."

That plan having turned out less than stellar... Aziel decides to check where the Princess is staying. Perhaps she kept a diary... Plus doing that while she wasnt there seemed a good idea.

He looks around... likely she would have installed herself in the most impressive building...

"I'm on trial for stealing a tomato, which I've already explained. If you were to try me for the other several thousand robberies, wouldn't that be a separate trial since they're separate crimes, and I might wrongfully be found guilty of one while innocent of another?"

Machina nods happily at this line of defense, even though he's practically parading his guilt at this point.
