The powerup works by temporarily restricting almost all of your elemental attacks and boosting the strength of the type that isn't restricted. Say for example that you wanted to use fire; any non-fire techniques (both offensive and defensive) would be mentally blocked, while those that are left gain an 80% increase in power without expending more of your energy. You can easily go without using the powerup in a fight, so it's not like you're stuck with it after consuming the pill.
Several things. One, the mode lock that comes with choosing an element/sub-element lasts for a few minutes, so you have to wait until then before you can either switch back to normal or to another element. Two, your appearance adjusts itself a little each time you use it. Nothing major; your hair and clothes just change color to reflect what you're using: cyan-yellow for electricity, tan and brown for earth, and so on and so forth.
