SimCity 2000 (affectionately known as SC2K) is often considered (rightfully) one of the best and most famous Simulation games of all time, if not THE best and most famous. Influential in just the same way that SimCity was, SimCity 2000 might be considered one of the influential forces behind some of the Simulation games of the mid 90's (such as Civilization II, Transport Tycoon, and other similar games like Capitalism Plus).
The premise of SimCity 2000 is the same as that of SimCity Classic. Simply put: You are in charge of a city, and you are given the opportunity (as mayor) to develop and grow the city. however, SimCity 2000 is naturally a bit more complex than SimCity Classic. Among some of the changes are the inclusion of a water system, train stations, subway systems, the ever-annoying church, reward buildings, highways, more power plants, and many other things, not to mention the "2.5-D" view of the game, giving your cities a sense of depth, instead of a top-down view that makes the game seem flat.
Many hundreds of thousands of cities have been made since the release, and thousands of them are still available to download on the web...
There are other innovations that were added to the game. Naturally, a terrain editor was needed in order to make the game more fun in "2.5-D". But some of the most interesting aspects were only introduced later. Among these were the scenario packs (it was much easier to make and add new scenarios to SimCity 2000 than Classic) and the ubiquitous (and now almost obligatory) SCURK, or Sim City Urban Renewal Kit. As a result, many building sets have been created for SimCity 2000, breathing new and more interesting life into SimCity 2000. Other things were done as well, such as enabling players to import their old SimCity cities (often with problems of blight due to the new simulation) and the creation of separate programs that would use SimCity 2000 cities. The most famous and successful of these was SimCopter, and another was Streets of SimCity.
SimCity 2000 was the father of games with cheat codes. Ever since, nearly every Maxis game has had its own share of cheats. In SimCity 2000, just type the code in while you are playing. There is no input box.
